I feel like 80% of manufacturing plants were made that long ago! Everywhere I've visited, the limiting factor has always been the same: "It's not the machines, its the building. This place was built in 19XX."

 

The oldest boiler is a 1933 and the newest is a 1968.

 

Oh, hot damn.......

 

I worked for Georgia Pacific once at the box plant in Ohio. Worst job I ever had. I actually ended up suing them and their crappy union for illegally firing me 4 times in a year. They tried to deny my FMLA when I was off for the birth of my daughter. My wife almost died delivering her. That company couldn't care less about what I was going through.

On one hand, i have to admit: they are VERY corporate!!! Corporate rules trump all sort of mentality. Also, the Unions they are associated with are terrible! On the other hand, I also believe that the tone is set by the Plant Manager. I was fortunate enough to work with one of the best ones on the West Coast.

However, he and both ran into the same issue: the things we wanted to implement (because we genuinely had the employees' best interests at hand) were severely hampered by the Union rules.

I had a unique, yet awkward position. I was classified as a "Temp," just like the Union folks, but I had a manager's type of responsibility. I couldn't be one without being the other, but I also got to see both sides of each world, and there was a HUGE disconnect!!!
