I've heard of many divorces happening after the military member retires. The spouses got so used to the military member being gone so much that when they finally had to live with them full time they realized they didn't like them.

Gotta get the first one out of the way.. Finding a girl that can keep up with this lifestyle is difficult, but once you find a good battle buddy, you are pretty much set for life.

I think the military lies to you to discourage you bringing your vehicle to Japan. I just got back from Yokosuka, Japan. We were stationed there for 3 years. We were told the same thing so we sold our vehicles prior to moving. There were a bunch of large vehicles on base including a F150. Sure, you will definitely be happier with a small vehicle if you drive in town but it is possible to bring your truck. Probably depends on your rank on if they allow you to also. I mostly used my car for driving on base and took the train everywhere because the roads are very tight and tolls everywhere.

From what I understand the rules changed around 1 Jan 2016. One of my buddies moved to Okinawa in Mar 16 and he couldn't take his truck. He was planning on it when he got his orders, but something changed just before he left and he was forced to sell.

I was stationed on Oki from Nov 2012 to Nov 2014, at the time it had a lot to do with rank, you would be able to bring a motorcycle but a car was very rare. That being said, depending on how handy you are as a mechanic, you might be able to get your vehicle to Okinawa, AND have the government pay for it. If you can take it all apart and fit it in a barracks room, or in your house and can pack it in boxes, you can ship it as household goods and then put it back together when you get there. Apparently there was a Marine that did that with a Skyline when he was shipped back to the states.

I personally would just sell it though. I've also heard a lot of horror stories from people that put their vehicles in gov storage, some totaled from damage due to no building upkeep, and one where the government just said "Hmmm, we lost it, whoops."

I left my vehicle with my family when I left, and my mom had gotten into two separate accidents with it, and tried to hide it from me.
