I have a 2008 4.0L V6 tacoma and i was wondering what is the best mod or additive that someone has done that would result in a better fuel economy?

 

Easy on the pedal is your best bet. Lighten up your truck like the stuff in your bed and cab you don't need. Those 20s arent' helping. Nether is that speaker box. Switch to all syn. fluids engine, rear diff, tranny already syn. don't need to worry about that till100k.

 

cover the bed up....

remove the ac system, the heater system, the rear seats, the passenger seat, door covers, carpet, gas pedal, glove box, cneter console, dash board, ....basically, anything that isn't needed for running the truck.

or just ease up on the gas pedal.

 

Install modulator to right foot.
Slower starts look ahead slow in advance of red lights so you catch them green. Amazing what you can do to your economy. Also if you live in a large city increase following distance so you do not have to slam on the brakes.

 

I found the best thing is to leave it in the garage and take the wifes Rav4. My mileage is all over the place this winter, one tank 17-18 avg the next 13 wtf How the heck can you get 18mpg local driving in a 09 Silverado crew 4x4 (friends truck) and only 13 in this thing...

 

the biggest gas mileage killer are short trips and lots of stop and go. plan your trip carefully. I take routes with longer straight drives than with lots of left or right turn, as you need to slow down and pick up speed again on each turn.

step on gas pedal slowly when starting from a stop, as if there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal and you are trying not to break it.

 

well besides his foot, like previouly stated all syn fluids, a good air intake, and good exhaust y-pipe back....should net 2 mpgs thats all your gonna see man sorry it s a truck and a big v-6

 

AFE pro dry-s may help too, or so I've heard. I have one and think I get more miles out of a tank.

The absolute best thing though is to never let rpms go over 2000. I did that when gas was $4 and it made a dramatic improvement in mpgs.

I liposuctioned 483#s off my truck last weekend and mileage went back to 18 mpg from 15.5 mpg.

 

A very light foot.
Check your MPG on every tank, you will see it improve if you can keep your foot out of it.

I wish my truck had an 8cyl in it. At least it would sound good while turning out such piss poor fuel efficiency.

 

Whatever you do, or decide to listen to, remember that at the end of the day what ever mod you do for milage needs to pay for itself over some period of time. If you spend $1000 on intake(s), exhaust(s), bed covers(s), etc. and possible net some magical +1,2,,,, number, how long is it going to take to offset that $1K? Do the math, it's probably longer then you'll have the truck.

If you are looking to increase milage, there is very little you can mod that makes $$$ sense. Now if you want something and are using milage to justify it, that's fine and it's your choice, but for milage, your foot and brain (driving habits) are the only $$$ way forward. Everthing else is about as accurate as the butt-dyno.

cheap/free: air up tires 36-40 ( mine go to 51psi)...test to your taste. pull the elbow out of the fender, i was surprised to find it seemed to help. When reasonable.. flats n such... shift at 2000 rpm or so. Ditch the great danes n get a chihuahua.

$$$ try an AfE pro dry... mine didnt seem to help mpg . Go synthetics, expect to pay something like $100+ for them , i only got 1mpg.....i think. buy 215 series highway tread tires and dont let us see you in the snow ......or see you , we may dis-own you

 

Cold air induction system, imo.

 

Pause not. I get worse mpg with my K&N. our trucks have cold air intakes from factory.

 

ummm.... no. mythbusters dedicated half a show to this myth. the worst thing you can do is cover the bed. the best thing you can do is put one of those mesh tailgates on. the second best thing you can do is leave your bed and tailgate stock.
