Subwoofer

I just got my new 08 Taco prerunner access cab. Love this baby to death. I want a sweet ass sound system in it but I have limited room for a subwoofer. I dont want to lose the access cab nor my storage console. Is there anyone that knows of good woofer space in the truck anywhere. I'd love a 10in sub if possible. If it comes to it, then a JL stealth box. Ideas are appreciated.

Check out my profile, ive got an Alpine 10" Type-R. That think kicks you in the pants when it hits. Plus with my box the people in the back get an arm rest.

 

For SQ you can not beat the Image Dynamics IDQ, I have two 10's and it sounds incredible.

 

BTW, I also have a pair of IDQ 10s and they do sound fantastic. Just be sure to get a quality box with proper airspace and you can make the most of the limited space.

 

steer away from truck boxes, they really knock down the potential of any sub you put in there, i have a 07 access cab with a 12 inch l7 kicker, i took out the back seat (behind diver side) and have it on the floor, so there is a loss of space but you do still have access to the understorage and there is a arm rest for the person in the back

 

Just curious as to what you believe causes truck boxes to "knock down the potential" of a sub?

 

less airspace, its the absolute minimum airspace the subwoofer should be placed, with a truck box your taking away alot of the knocking bass from having more airspace i have a double cab, and tried my l7 in a kicker truck box and in my normal full size kicker box, and the full size is much louder and produces more of a booming bass then the truck box

 

Any sub, really? How can you back this claim up?

Airspace is airspace. If you compare boxes of equal airspace, with all other conditions the same, I am pretty sure you will find equal preformance. By all other conditions I mean, same vehicle, same amplification, same sub, same voice coil configuration, same crossover, same source, same wiring, same source material (frequency or song) same volume level at the HU, same direction and relative position in the vehicle, everything... except volume of the enclosure.

When you switched boxes, from a truck box to whatever you are using now, did the position of the sub change? I find that standing waves inside the cab can have a much greater impact on sonic preformance than small fluctuations in box volume. So, if you are repositioning the sub in relation to the vehicle it is in, you can effect how the sound waves interact.

 

If the truck box is within the desired parameters of the driver, then there should be no issue. But why are you assuming that you can't get a good box volume out of a truck box? The full size box you are using probably does have larger airspace than the truck box you were using, I don't doubt this; however, the change in volume is the issue, not the fact that it is a wedge shaped box. I know, you said less airspace above, I am just clarifying for those reading this that it is not the shape of the box that is the issue, it is the volume of the enclosure (and positioning of the driver) that are the root to your claim that the box affects subwoofer performance.

Typically, a larger airspace in a sealed enclosure with result in a boomier sound. This is due to the dampening effect of the confined air within the box. The shape has no real bearing here. The power handling of the VC due to mechanical limitations is also affected here (typically goes down with an increase in volume for the same reason above).

My point here is, that when building a box, the T/S parameters should be followed for best results. Don't worry about what shape the box is unless it limits where you can put it for optimal sonic performance or other more important criteria.
