How was the install?? Does it require a lot of splicing into the factory wiring??

You have to run a dedicated power wire from the battery to under seat. The door sill channel has plenty of room in it for wires then go under the carpet and cut hole in it under the seat. You also have to pick up the right and left channels of audio for either at the head unit or the doors. I chose the head unit the dash comes apart real easy. 4 bolts and the head unit is out.
Its really not that hard just take your time and allow yourself a few hours. The sub comes with all the required wiring and fuse. You don't need any other parts with the Rockford.

This. I bought adapters from him and would have bought more if I didn't have the other pieces already. I got one of his boxes from a member here and love it.

Awesome! Thank you for the response! Are the factory speakers able to keep up with the sub?

I went Rockford Fosgate..100watt 6x9 coax, 1" tweets and crossovers. 2 MTX 12's behind the seat in a Mr Marv box. 2 amps. Love it.

They almost keep up. I run the sub at about 3/4 volume. Someday I'll probably upgrade the factory speakers but that opens up another can of worms needing a amp is what everyone is saying.
I suspect people are getting less volume from aftermarket speakers because the impedance is different. Most aftermarket are 4 ohm. I haven't checked the factory yet but they may be 2 ohm speakers.
Maybe someone in this thread who replaced speakers could ohm one out?

The best? Thats an entry level upgrade with cheap components and large retail markup

From Crutchfield: This basic system comes equipped with tweeters in the upper front doors, 6"x9" speakers in the lower front doors, and 6-1/2" speakers in the rear doors. Toyota typically uses 4-ohm speakers in their factory systems, so most aftermarket speakers will work well in the Tacoma

You know, I'm sorry, but I don't really know the specifics. There are some variations in Punches, and I never got a box or part number. I've been dealing with my stereo guy for years and I don't do research or anything, I just do what he says. He just said Rockford Fosgate Punch.

Ok, I made a mistake. I replaced my front speakers with JBL GTO 939 3-way 6x9 speakers (not Pioneers). Definite inprovment.

I have the system and I'd hardly qualify them as "cheap" components. I was rather impressed with the craftmanship. I had just the Kicker Sub/DSP setup similar in my Chevy and it was almost as much as a full OEM kit. It's expensive cuase it's low volume built to order. I think the person you quoted meant it's better than JBL unless you go all out on a system. I've built systems in the past, but opted for the higher opportunity cost and went with plug and play.

I guess in general too it depends on a few things. Mine had the stock radio anyway, but I had the system out of my last truck. Silly not to use it. I paid a shop to do the install, mainly because in the winter months here in MA it is a tad bit cold for my tastes to spend most of a day doing the work

Has anyone considered sealing up the rear doors and throwing in some 6 inch subs? I definitely don't want anything that takes up space in or behind the back seat. I'm not totally against the under-seat option but it'd be cool if I could throw it all in the doors.

I replaced my OEM speakers with these running off of an Alpine power pack behind the head unit.
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_091IS690TY/Focal-IS-690TOY.html
Also, I installed a Kicker Hideaway under the drivers seat and the difference is huge.
I will never install any other speakers than Focals from now on, and the IS-690TOY's are plug and play made specifically for the Tacoma front door speakers.

While the door panels are off, I'd also recommend putting Dynamat at least around the speakers. I did my doors and there is zero vibration and the speakers hit hard and clean. I almost didn't even need to install a sub.

I have the premium JBL system and was wondering how difficult it would be to put an amp and subwoofer in it? Recommendations anyone?

    Base Entune Plus here.

I replaced the tweeters with MB Quart 1" dome tweeters on custom plates by using the factory tweeters to scavenge the oddball parallel harness plug to keep it plug and play. Also placed a Kicker HS8 behind the passenger side rear seat. That is all plug and play as well. I mounted the HS8 on some .75" MDF to keep it from rattling around and to reinforce the sound. Works great! I still have to turn the system up to 70-80% with the windows down but I have bass and real high hat instead of muted, muffled high hat like before with the paper cone "tweeter" they installed from the factory. Big improvement without cutting factory wiring because I am still considering the OEM Audio+ system at some point and wanted to make sure I could do it.

I just did Subaru kicker tweeters (h631sfj101)
which are plug and play. Kicker 6x9
and kicker 6.75 in the rear. Also installed a alpine amp under the stock head unit. No cutting of factory wires if you use these harnesses with that alpine ktp-445u amp.

    71-1761 reverse wire harness.
    70-1761 Toyota radio harness.
72-8104 speaker harness for the doors.
82-8146 6x9 inch front speaker adapters.
82-8148 6.5 inch rear speaker adapters

You will have wires in both harness that are not used. Just follow the color codes. Cap off the two brown wires and there is another wires that isn't used on the harnesses. Solder in the alpine amp and then it's just plug and plug. Set dip switch to speaker level inputs and cap off blue remote wires on the alpine amp as they are not needed.

Also on the speaker adapters. Front and rear require a dremel to work though. Need to shave plastic off.

Sound is ok. better then stock. Still don't know why Toyota thinks manual tacomas don't need jbl.

Well worth the money and simple to install. I had some Kicker 6x9 components in before I went to the Focals, and it was like going from stock again.
