    I only need one for inside or outside the truck cause I don't plan on mounting the boafeng. Once I get a feel for the HT if I like it I'll probably get a true dual-band mobile radio like a yaesu 7900 or similar.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys. I ended up getting a single baofeng ur-5rtp with programming cable, high capacity battery, and collapsible 15.6" Nagoya whip. All in at just under $75. Not too shabby for a radio with the extra transmit power. I can always add a mag mount antenna and battery eliminator later. Maybe a separate mic too. At that point though I may as well just get a mobile rig.

    @odomandr told me Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu I am sticking with one of those. Have heard of TYT elsewhere but no clue on their quality.

    Just got done downloading the TWCO chirp file to my radio. So far I havent been able to hear anything. Anyone have channel recommendations to listen to with fairly frequent traffic on them so I can verify I did this all correctly?

    I usually pickup conversations on 2-3 different channels each morning on my drive to work. Not sure of each one other than the frequency I stated in a prior post. I can get specifics for you tomorrow if desired.

    The 145.145 channel people are mentioning is part of the Colorado Repeater Association (w0cra) and for some strange reason it's not in the TWCOHAM file. I'll have to fix that.
    145.145 is on Squaw Mountain. Being north of Denver myself, I've been accessing that repeater network through 145.460 on Eldorado (currently down I think)

    The other changes I need to make are in the Colorado Connection Repeater network. They changed all of their squelch tones to 88.5 and I still have a few at 123

    So i decided to go with 8" aftermarket HT antennas because some studies you lose very little range/power. But what you gain is an HT that is easier to wield in the sense that it doesn't have this really long whip antenna flying around. The two I have are from diamond, and from Nagoya. Neither seem like counterfeit but who knows.the packaging was good and has a QR CODE that leads you to Nagoya.

    Note that these are both BNC connector antennas. This means that to swap from using the radio as a vehicle mounted unit with a rooftop antenna, to a HT you can walk around with only requires a quick 1/4 twist rather than having to spin the radio around and around to remove from the SMA connex. Connecting the 8 inch antenna is the same, a 1/4 twist.

    So the Nagoya is noticeable beefier than the diamond, which feels very light duty. That said the diamond is super flexible and lightweight
