Road trip = no freight, Oregon = no sales tax. If you time it right there are many great places to break in you new RTT.

Anyone use the tuff stuff 1/4" anti condensation mat? Going in a tepui Kukenam. Would prefer to pay the 75$ for tuff stuff vice the $130 tepui wants.

I purchased a Smittybilt tent at a 4WP sale today for $712 and also got their 3year no questions asked extended warranty for an additional 75 bucks. Grand total out the door after tax was 850 bucks.

I've been using my RTT traveling around the last couple days. I have to say CVT always treats me right. I live in bend so they are local. If it is answering questions or picking up gear, they are helpful. They have a lot more then just tents.

Got my Tuff Stuff Scout mounted and setup in the driveway today. So far I'm pretty impressed with it. The real test will be a 5 day trip to Death Valley in about a week. IMG_2063.jpg

Alright guys and gals. I'm now in the market for a RTT. I'm pretty sure about the tent. My question is about the rack. I'm not sure what to do here. I'm 90% sure I don't want to mount on the roof as I don't want to greatly impact mpg. I'm pretty sure I want it to go into a bed rack. I would technically want a 14-ish inch rack. Again, mostly because I don't want it to be above the roofline.
So specifically, with regards to the annex, if mounted on a shorter bed rack, will I have issues with the annex? Anyone with this config please chime in and as always, pics would be awesome.

In my pic above my rack only sits about 6" over the bed and my tent is pretty much even with the roof. I would think a 14" rack would have the tent way over the roof.

Saw a Yakima at REI today too. Felt cheap. The mattress was thin and soft. The fabric felt cheap too. Just MO

Do any of you with an hardshell tent, have a ladder that actually attaches to the tent or rack itself? Or are you guys okay with a ladder just leaning up? I'm looking for one that would attach!

I thought the same. Very cheap and flimsy.

No my model doesn't. It wouldn't work very well with how low the tent is mounted.

With a RTT on a short bed rack/bars the annex is virtually useless. I'm on bed bars (Relentless tall) and the tent is just above the cab. I have a Frontrunner rack on the cab and the tent pretty much sits level with that. I would very much like to use my annex for longer stays but it's just not worth the trouble or practical. With the limited height you don't utilize the full potential/footprint of the annex. I've considered mounting the RTT on the Frontrunner rack (to make use of all the annex offers) but damn that's a mighty tall package. I like the lower profile, and prefer that versus use of the annex.

Now with that said, BAMF offers a mighty nice bed rack tall enough to mount stuff on the sides and still keep the RTT fairly low (a annex could be doable with this rack). KB Voodoo also makes a nice mid height rack. I'm not sorry I went with the Relentless bed bars, one of the main reasons for me was still being able to park the rig in the garage with the RTT mounted.

Having had my tent mounted both over the bed (on my 1st gen) and on the roof (on the Runner) I prefer the roof. MPG impact is minimal - maybe 1 or 2 in heavy winds - and the annex is so much more useful now. When the tent was lower on my truck I couldn't stand up in the annex and hardly ever used it. Now it's much nicer - as a sleeping space or to shower or hang out and avoid the bugs.
