And last update that I posted in the wrong area was today (3/02)

Update got all the little bits and what not. Instead of searching for used hubs, lockouts, and non add tube I decided to use my good old parts department and buy everything brand shiny new

In the picture it shows my two new hubs and completely new non add shaft tube assembly new seals for the diff. Also are the studs, cone washers, washers and nuts to bolt the lockouts on the hub. And there is also the nut and dust seals for the new wheel bearings which I do not have yet.

Last things I need are wheel bearings and axles which I'll get new/reman aftermarket. And I need the speed sensor and interior trim and we are ready to start rippin her apart.

Ps thank god I get these at cost otherwise this would have been pretty pricey and sourcing all these parts would have took a lot more time I was just not willing to give cause I'm both impatient and eager.

    Good day everyone

Can anybody tell me what if anything holds the cv axle in the hub on a non add setup? I can't seem to find any info on it. Is it a clip or a bolt on the end of the axle?

Installed my non add tube, cleaned and painted my diff today. Also made sure it really was a 4.10 final drive. And it's all good ready to install in the truck

Damn...those are some nice shiny new parts.

About the whole swapping out harnesses....uhhhh no you dont need to be swapping no damn harnesses; if you haven't actually done this swap dont post wrong info. I've went from 2wd prerunner to 4x4 auto to 4x4 5 speed manual on the 3.4 v6. You just need to get the SAME YEAR ecu as your truck year. Has to be same year, same trans, same engine....for ex like 3.4 v6 4x4 auto....it says so right on the ecu .if u going for auto; cannot be manual or from 2.7 ecu.

I got the j-shift TC and non-ADD front diff, mines looks exactly like yours from the pic above wid da non-ADD jack shaft...also did manual hubs at same time AND geared to 4.88. Its kinda cool seeing a 2001 taco with manual hubs because manual hub'd trucks only came from factory on some of the 95.5-00 trucks.

The ecu was the hardest to find, because i wanted a manual. It took a couple of weeks because i had to find a: 2001 V6 4x4 manual......it had to be this exact one.....not an auto or one from another year or one for the 2.7.

For you, find a 2003 v6 4x4 auto ecu. You should be able to swap out your current ECU for the other one cause the connectors plug right in and you dont need to mod anything......meaning no need to be swapping out no damn harness from a donor truck to yours.

Are you talking to me or tacotime? I feel like your talking to tacotime thinking it's his thread maybe? Bc I'm the OP and I'm not swapping any harnesses or ecu's.

Yeah but I bought new hubs and aisin lockouts which neither come with studs or cone washers. So 12 of each of those add up. Like I said I'm lucky I work at toyota so I get everything at pretty much cost.

Just in general to everyone.....wasnt meant to single anyone out. When i first began reading....i felt that there were some info that could be mis-informing. Just settin it straight from someone who's been there and dun it.

If you wanted to go the manual route, you have to do some wiring mod....theres a diagram somewhere on here or ttora helping with...and its year specific too...just an fyi

Slow day at work on Thursday so i pulled my truck in the shop installed the diff and did all the press work In the knuckles including the new bearings, hubs and seals.

Now I must say I work at Toyota and have done multiple bearings and we have pretty much every necessary adapter to do most yota bearings. This would be extremely hard for any old Joe Schmo shop to do. I'm not saying they couldn't but I'm just sayin ya know lol. If your going to do it yourself make sure you know how to use a press it is really easy to mess up your brand new bearings or break a spindle.

On with the show for all you visual learners

    IMG_0048.jpg
Took knuckle off of the truck removed 2wd bearing cover and bearing nut and got ready to press.

    IMG_0049.jpg
Pressed the old 2wd hub out of the knuckle

    IMG_0050.jpg

This snap ring holds the other side of the bearing. Mines were jammed in there pretty good and got bent pretty good trying to remove them. I couldn't save/reuse them thank god we had some in stock.IMG_0051.jpg
Better look at the snap ring.
    IMG_0052.jpg
    New snap rings.
    IMG_0053.jpg
Pressing what's left of the bearing out of the knuckle.
    IMG_0054.jpg
Cleaned the bearing bore and setup the press to install the new bearing.
    IMG_0055.jpg
Bearing installed just past the snap ring groove.
    IMG_0056.jpg
    Installed snap ring.
    IMG_0057.jpg
Installed new outer bearing dust seal.
    IMG_0058.jpg
Setting up the new hub getting ready to press in.
    IMG_0059.jpg
Pressing the new hub in the bearing/knuckle assembly. Be very careful during this step, it is really easy to mess up your new bearings and push the inside race out of the back side of the bearing. The next picture shows more clearly what I used to support the inner race.
    IMG_0060.jpg
The hub is already pressed fully in the knuckle /bearing assembly here. Notice the adapter I used supports the race so I don't mess up the bearing. You could easily use a big enough socket but I didn't have one so I used this that we had lying around the shop.
    IMG_0061.jpg
    The installed hub/bearing/knuckle assembly.
    IMG_0062.jpg
Reinstalled abs tone ring. This just slips right in there no problem.

I forgot to take pics of the last 2 steps but after this all you do is install your new bearing nut and torque to 174ftlbs and then install your inner bearing seal and your done.

Rinse and repeat the other side.
    IMG_0063.jpg
Reinstall your new knuckle assemblies and your new knuckles are ready to accept cv axles.
    IMG_0064.jpg
I put a glove around my inner seal because I'm not putting the axles in at this time to protect water/dirt from getting in my new bearings.

The rest of the pictures are of the diff installed and I put gloves around those seals too to avoid getting water/dirt/debris in the diff too.
    IMG_0046.jpg
    IMG_0047.jpg
    IMG_0065.jpg
    IMG_0066.jpg
    IMG_0067.jpg

Hope you all enjoyed the show.

Not documenting this part but the trans swap has begun. Started at midnight and between taking lots of breaks and stuff took me 3 and a half hours to pull.

    IMG_0075.jpg

Looks like I'll be able to swap valve bodies, top picture is the new tranny bottom is the old. Gonna finish this up tomorrow and while I'm doing that I'll drop my driveshaft off to get shortened. IMG_0074.jpg IMG_0073.jpg

Conversion is complete and successful. Just need a speed sensor and interior trims and it's done. Thanks for everyone's help I'll be updating this thread as I do more things and button up the conversion on the truck. Once again thanks guys.

Ps I got lucky swapping valve bodies worked

    HI,
I've done a 4x4 conversion on my truck about 1 year ago but now it's time for my smog... ugh. I've been procrastinating the vss since I've done it. Plus it's kind of haRd to get a clear answer. Which sensor did you end up using? My tcase is from a 96 4 runner. Thanks

haha I just got my truck smogged. How do they smog yours?

Somethings been going on with my VSS though. The speedometer will bounce around and sometimes it'll just stop and say 0.
I replaced the actual VSS but still the same problem. Think it might be the worn gears on it. Either way my funky speedo passed smog.
