Does anyone know if you can register a vehicle in another county?

I sold my truck, but my buyer lives in Boulder county (we're in Larimer). Can he register it here in Larimer, and if not how can he get the truck home to Boulder county to register it?

He can pick up a temp registration at the DMV in the courthouse if you want to do it by the book. Either here or Boulder county should do it.

I'm not sure if larimer county requires emissions, but boulder county does. So as long as it can pass emissions all the buyer would need is a bill of sale and title to register in another county.

Not 100% sure, but I think with a bill of sale you get like 24 hours to drive it and get it plated.

    Thanks!

I just had it emissions tested (passed), and I still have the certificate dated 01/25/2017. I just put plates on it, I wasn't sure when I was going try and sell it at the time. :anonymous:

No, you cannot register a vehicle in a county in which you do not reside. Yes, Larimer County requires emissions. In CO, you have 60 days from a sale to register a vehicle. You don't need the vehicle there, just proof of sale and title, so he can register/get his tags down there and bring the plates up here, or as Star-Lord said just get a temp tag at either place. http://www.dmv.org/co-colorado/car-registration.php and scroll down the page to "Vehicles Purchased or Transferred from a Private Party" for more info.

So the plan SO far is to just have him drive it back to Longmont with no plates. It seems as though as long as he has the bill of sale and insurance he's cool for 36 hours.

A business owner friend of ours bought one of her busses down in Denver, that's how she got it home then (drove it up with bill of sale, no plates).

Last few times I bought a vehicle the seller left the plates on it and I mailed them back or dropped them off once I had gotten it registered

Says right on the title that the seller is to remove the plates.

Well whaddya know - he can drive it with no plates for up to 36 hours.

He needs to have a bill of sale or other paperwork showing that he owns it, but he's fine without plates. Just verified this with the DMV this morning!

    ^ This.

I buy/sell lots of vehicles around Colorado. Actually just bought a car in Denver and drove down to the Springs. Been pulled over a few times, by highway patrol and local, for no plates (I'm lucky like that) and as long as I prove I have insurance and either have a bill of sale and/or a signed title in my possession, they have yet to give me any grief. That said, I wouldn't advise parking it anywhere for any notable length of time. Make sure they get home and to the DMV in a timely manner.

DO NOT let a buyer you don't trust keep the plates. I sold a Volvo last year. Since, I've received 3 parking tickets and dozens of toll charges. I finally tracked the car on Christmas Day 2016, ripped the rear plate off (front was inside car, wasn't going to B&E for it) and left a nice "Merry Christmas" note. Since, I've got 2 more toll charges....that bastard's running the front plate on the rear now :luvya: All in all, I've spent about $250 on being nice and letting that @#$% keep plates because he was nervous about driving home with none. Never. Again.

Still trying to find him again so that front plate can be cut up and stuck into each of his tires.
