Icon or OME or both???

K guys... its crunch time. I ordered my Dakar rear leaf pack and its on back order till April so I have a little time to decide.

Icons in the front and rear
or
Icons in the front and OME struts in the back?

I'm thinking OME in the rear because they were designed to go with the Dakar leaf pack? What are your thoughts?

It really depends on what you plan on doing with your truck. If you are putting on a lift for aesthetics or even mild offroading then I say go with OME all the way around. If you are looking to get into some more hard core offroading then I say go with ICON or some of the other brands mentioned in this thread.

Keep in mind that the ICON's are rebuildable and WILL require a rebuild every few years depending on the type of action they see. This will require you to remove them from your truck and have a local shop rebuild them or send them back to ICON for a rebuild. This will potentially leave you without your truck for a few days depending on the turn around times. OME shocks are not rebuildable and will be less maintenance in the long run. When they ware out, you just buy new shocks and replace them in an afternoon.

My truck is set up for towing and mild offroading, which is why I went with the Dakar's and OME N182's. I currently have a set of ICON's in the front that I'm in the process of replacing with OME. The ICON's have a stiffer spring and are simply more then I need; plus I don't want to deal with the rebuild process later on down the road.

 

This thread makes me want to cry a little. I'm not looking at doing much for serious offroading, but would like the capability of going off roading everynow and then, without sacrificing ride quality. I had my heart set on Icons. That and I can't get past the ugly yellow of the OMEs. Another down side to the icons is the fact that you have to have them rebuilt.

 

^ you only have to have them rebuilt if you beat them up offroad which you just stated your not going to be doing a whole lot of so i doubt you'll need a rebuild which is usually done every few years or so. a rebuild is better than having to replace the entire part.

i say icons. i have their OE replacement CO' right now and i have their long trav shocks on order

 

its all in what you wanna drop price wise . you could do icon ome tc camburg fox king race runner or whatever else is out there

 

I am quoting the documentation I received with my ICON's. I can scan this document tomorrow if you you want to see the rebuild / care maintenance writeup from ICON themselves.

"How do I know when I need to have my shocks re-built?

1. When the shock is leaking. Some oil dampness around the shaft and shaft housing is normal. A shock is considered leaking and in need of a re-build when oil collects in the lower coil cup or the rod end is wet.
   
2. 2 years of service under normal driving conditions. Earlier if they are put through many high heat cycles.
   
3. Clunking or extreme change in ride quality. Some change in ride quality may be due to temperature or additional vehicle weight."

Are you telling me that ICON is wrong and that line item #2 is incorrect? I spoke with several people regarding this topic and I was told that you can stretch the time frame out, but it's not recommended. If you do rebuilds every two years, it will be more expensive in the long run over having a maintenance free shock (i.e. OME). Plus you have to deal with the hassle of having the shocks off your truck during the rebuild.

This is strictly my opinion, but if you are not an avid offroader I strongly believe that you are better off going with an OME setup.
