So i took my truck in for a standard oil change but asked if i can swap out to synthetic oil and the dealership told me that I cannot use synthetic on my motor. Also they told me that at 30k miles I need to change spark plugs. Is this true or they just trying to stick it to me

You can use synthetic on either. Maybe they told you they won't do it instead of saying "we can, but you have to pay for it."

Also, not sure of the service interval on spark plugs, check your manual. It'll tell you.

If you have a V6, the 30,000mi spark plug interval is normal, but I just found out mine have been in for 160k. (Bought the truck used) I believe the whole oil thing is BS though. If you haven't used synthetic from the start it will lose some of the benefit, but thats as far as my knowledge goes on any "issue"

I needed an inspection to get mine ready for sale so I had the dealership do a service too. They put in synthetic as I had been doing it. Switch stealerships and try again.

You can leave them in longer than that, but I'll be doing mine at 30k because I'm kinda OCD like that, and I can do it myself for like $15-$20.

Is that a Toyota Corp deal or from the dealer?

Nothing major planned, this is my daily driver. - replaced stock tires with Cooper AT3s - added Husky WeatherBeater floor mats - installed Access Original bed cover - installed Gentex 453 mirror and the included external temp sensor, also has Homelink and auto-dim - installed ImMrYo mirror bracket - hose clamp mod and washer mod to secure tailgate, with a GateKeeper lock installed over the hose clamp - replaced stock reverse lights with Philips Halogen 30w from Home Depot GY6.35 base
I did my own spark plug change at 30k and it was a pain (2014 v6). The old plugs looked fine and I noticed no difference afterwards in how it ran (or anything else).

Dave, what kind of pain did you have with the plug change? You lucky you do not have a Highlander. That's a pain!

the pain was in getting to the plugs, especially on the driver's side. There are pic and directions somewhere on TW. A few things need to be loosened and/or removed on that side. Also, each plug is down several inches at the bottom of a cylinder-shaped hole so inserting new plugs is a challenge. Much more involved than my lawn tractor, snow blower, etc!

Doesn't the service plan cover maintenance? Spark plug replacement is maintenance.

I'm not surprised they will only use the spec'd oil even if you are asking for better oil to be used. It's more hassle for them to figure out the extra cost and charge you the difference, when it's easier to just say no. If they are a busy shop they won't mind turning down a few jobs here or there. But this attitude does indicate an apparent lack of willingness to satisfy their customers requests, even reasonable ones.
