Really underwhelmed with the maps on the truck. Im wondering if anyone has come out with a better chip for the map?
    <edit>
I guess I need to clarify what this thread is about, what with all the city folk chiming in saying how great the thing is in helping them find the nearest yogurt store, I don't care how good the thing gets you around in the city. I am not interested in getting directions to the mall or finding the closest Starbucks. I want the thing to show me in detail where I am at when the pavement ends.

Never had a use for onboard nav with a smart phone. I use waze. Highly recommend...assuming you have a smart phone.

I think it's the best out there out of the box. Better than my parents Benz, wayyyy better than the Ford, last car was a Lexus so the interface is the same.

    I concur, the map sucks.
I hate fiddling with my phone though.

The screen is fine, and the GPS works fine, so it's not hardware. I'm hoping there's a software update coming someday to improve the usability.

InReach and Earthmate app for all others!!! Just kidding that's not realistic expectation.

Not sure of better maps though. I wonder if Lexus maps are better and if compatible.

Exactly. It has a scan disk type chip in it. You can remove it. We just need to find a better chip.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
I use Gaia GPS for both wheeling and even hiking on my phone. No complaints so far, even when I do not have any coverage.

May have to use it separately from your system.

    special note:
Waze don't give a shiiiiitt. It will take you through a cemetery and an elementary school but you will damn sure get where your going. Also its lets you know if any other cars are broke down on the way should you happen to see any other sap that took the recommended waze route. Waze is probably the best out there IMHO but like I said it doesn't give a damn how it gets you from point A to point B.

I've had a few times where ive seriously doubted Waze. Like when I'm trying to go south east and the Waze is taking me due north (this happened twice). Come to find out it's either a crash or some huge event is causing major traffic. I drive ten minutes in the wrong direction to save an hour in traffic. I'm a believer.

At this point when I blindly follow Waze. It has yet to lead me down the wrong road

But yes the maps suck. I don't think the interface is awful but I think the routes just aren't very accurate

In-dash navigation systems are all garbage. Antiquated technology. Any phone with google maps or other will outperform any in-dash unit no matter how much you spend.

Hence my goal for dropping a tablet in my dash. Sooooooon

Thats going to be the route I have to go. They have an app for a tablet. Don't know why we can't get that kind of map for the Toyota GPS

I think when it comes to update the map, I'll set it up to mirror my phone.

Wait till you have to pay for the map update. And they aren't any better.

    Garmin Nuvi portable for me.

Free updates, can pop in another vehicle, can take on trips where I fly and get a rental.
