TK's 2015 locked DCLB TRD Sport

I decided to make a thread to keep track of my modifications and hopefully help out anyone if they're thinking about doing a mod that I've already done. Feel free to ask me about any part of my build.

I bought my truck (Ol' Smokey) in August of 2015 after being dead set on buying a Chevy Silverado 1500. It was out of my budget and so was the Tundra. Throughout my build, keep in mind that I bought a truck, to use as a truck. My goal is keep the bed open. EDIT: that goal went out the fucking window.

The only reason why I bought a TRD Sport was the option of a long bed. At that time, I wasn't educated on lockers and all the wheeling vernacular. However, I'd still take the option of a long bed over a rear locker (3rd gen guys have the luxury of both). When I bought the truck, I also had no intention at all of doing this amount of stuff to it. So that's just another example of what TW does.

But basically, if it's cheaper than the name brand and it works, I'll buy it.

Nice setup! I'm about to install a light bar and some pods. How did you wire yours to the switch(es) in the cab? Go through the boot under steering column?

 

Thanks man. I followed the stock wiring route through the huge rubber grommet in the engine bay on the driver side.

Tall bed bars (from Heavy Metal Off-Road) were built for the truck. I got stick of shit wiggling around because they were just mounted to the bed rails. I had to shop around because I didn't want a full bed rack; I wanted independent bars that I could adjust. I could not find any big name fabrication who made near cab height bars, so I opted for the custom option.

Cons: no more open bed
Pros: now I can mount things properly

.5" Wheelers top plate spacers added. Truck is a little more level now.

Nice build. Fyi, You can always revert to a bedrack that is "open" I'm still able to put my bike in my bed with the rack staying in place. Just have to switch brands.

 

While I totally agree about buying off brand stuff for cheaper...wheel spacers are NEVER one of those items. They are not the same and the quality and grade of metals is far inferior.

 

Thanks! And yeah, I've seen that bed rack. I like the engineering of it, however I don't particularly like how it looks.

Have you run no-name wheel adapters before?

 

No but I have been wheeling with people who have and witnessed the wheel go flying by me because they failed.

 

That's pretty odd. Did a stud the adapters break off? Also, were they hub centric? That's the big determining factor, I hear.

The studs on the adapters I bought, are actually higher grade than Spidertrax/Bora, which was why I chose them over the name brand. I've never seen or heard of anyone's wheels flying off because of wheel adapters, period.

Also, FWIW, They are 'wheel spacers' if the remain the same bolt pattern. Wheel 'adapters' are when changing lug patterns.

Hmm, I just looked up the difference, and there's mostly conflicting information online. The local shops I've been to prefer to call them wheel adapters, I guess.

 

I could be smoking crack, I've always understood it by what others have said as well. Also the derivative of the words, adapter, meaning to change or be adjusted to new conditions. Whereas a spacer is an extension or addition to achieve a longer length.

To each his own I suppose. Also, I like how you incorporated all of the different Rotopax's onto the rack.

Actually all 6 studs snapped. I will never forget it. I'm sure you are more than fine, but it's a risk I am not willing to take since it could mean life or death.

 

Yeah, that absolutely makes sense to me, the more I think about it. I think all wheel adapters are also spacers, but not all wheel spacers are adapters...some bullshit like that. I consider that I stand corrected. Always good to learn new things.

RotopaX is so damn convenient...and they know that too, so their shit is so expensive, but I haven't found another product like it.

And god damn. I don't go that easy on my truck and so far, nothing. So yeah, I think I'm good. Besides, they make the stance too badass to take off...
