I have found that it is most effective to only shift after redlining each gear.

It makes it less likely for me to stall. And clutch dump in first as well, just to be safe.

This. Make sure it's above 4000 rpm, because VVTi. :burnrubber:

This question comes up from time to time on TW and I have to say that I just don't get it. You shift when it needs to be shifted. Sometimes that's barely above idle and sometimes it's when it hits the rev limiter. It is totally situational and something you just feel. So stop worrying about it and just drive the truck.

I start off in third gear and shift straight into 6th as soon as I've let the clutch all the way out

You'll want to follow the tachometer (engine rpm) instead of the speedometer (wheel rotational speed) for this.

I shift when the little needle thingy is past the red rpm thingy and the truck is roaring like a race horse. It makes the ladies think I'm a badass:burnrubber:

Might want to peruse that thread a bit.

There is no official recommendation because each situation may call for a different shift point. That's the beauty of a manual right? Total operator control.

    Here are my suggestions.

Best fuel econ cruise RPM 1,300-2,000 RPM. In town, in 5th or 6th and <1,500 RPM you can see 30 mpg+
Minimum cruise RPM (no acceleration) is about 1,300 RPM
Minimum RPM to get minimal acceleration is about 1,500 RPM.
Shift point for modest everyday acceleration 2,500 RPM. This will net best fuel econ
Shift point for moderate acceleration (freeway on-ramp) 3,000 RPM.
Shift point for heavy load moderate acellration 4-5,000 RPM
Shift point for max acceleration 6,000 RPM/Redline

I see this answer a lot and it is IMHO a very dangerous suggestion. If the tach was on the top of the dash or mounted to the A pillar maybe. but to drive around looking at your tach is as bad, no...probably worse, than testing while driving.

Keep your eyes on the road and shift when it feels right.

you don't stare at the thing, its an occasional glance like looking in your rear view or side view mirrors, but eventually yes it'll become natural and you can feel it.

I didn't mean to stare at the thing. The 'science' is to shift based on engine speed, not a particular vehicle speed.

You have to glance at the tach when you are getting use to a vehicle just to calibrate RPM to the way the vehicle feels. After that, you are right, you can generally shift based on feel and sound.

Gee how did we ever drive MTs before tachs became standard equipment?

It is a sad state of affairs in this country when there are more 15-year-old European girls who know how to drive stick, then there are red-blooded American "men".

OP, surely you have a bf, father, grandpa, uncle, somebody who can spend an hour with you.
