good advice. ive been pulled over twice out of the 4 years ive been driving (both in the first year) I just treated the officer with respect and didnt give him a smartass answer. I knew i was going a little too fast (only 10-15 over the limit) so when i was asked if I knew why i was pulled over i gave them the honest truth. "I was speeding" i didnt exactly know how fast i was cuz the speedo was off a little bit but when the officer asked me if i knew how fast i was going i just told him, "honestly, i wasnt paying much attention sir" got off with a warning on each of them but i was damn lucky.

Yeah, sucks but no matter how right you might be and how wrong the cop might be, the cop wins in the end no matter what. No point trying to fight it, just try to make things go as well as possible by being nice to the guy. I got pulled over once on the Mass. turnpike, my girlfriend at the time was driving. The cop had a major attitude and was wicked rude to both of us, and when he handed us the ticket I made the mistake of saying "gee, thanks buddy" and the guy whirled around, made me get out of the car, and patted me down. Claimed he did it because he "smelled pot" which was bull. After that, it's "yes sir, no sir, sorry sir" for me.

Sounds like he was just having a shitty night. Unfortunately it got taken out on you. Better to err on the side of caution like you did. I'll stop people to give them a heads up; and maybe he thought he was doing just that; but the second an attitude comes around it's almost like fine have it your way.

Xaks, you made a lot of great points, but you sound very paranoid. I'm currently at 15 years in law enforcement, with much of that (and currently) dealing in narcotics.

Some of the things you are telling him to do will send up some major red flags. You tell him to only roll down his window only a few inches and not all the way. #1, among officers this is considered very rude unless it's raining or inclement weather. Is it within your right? OF COURSE. Is it within OUR right to find it rude? OF COURSE. The red flag this would send to ME if I was the officer stopping him is....hmmmm is he/she trying to hide something (like an odorl)????

    2) You say to exit and lock your doors. Not bad advice and something that I might not even think twice about. But if someone made that comment to me I would take it as them being a smartass, which is not good.

    3) If he asks you ANYTHING else, you tell him to say "Pardon? I don't consent to a search of my person or vehicle...am I under arrest or am I free to go?" ANYTHING else OR specifically to search your vehicle?Once again you are right, but if someone said this to me without me specifically asking to search, this would also throw up a red flag...hmmmm What is he hiding?

Remember a ticket is a privilege, not a right! I have had people get smart with me and send up these red flags. 99.9% of the time an officer will let you sign your ticket and go..but HE DOESN'T HAVE TO. He does not have to let you sign a ticket, he can book you straight into jail on the violations and tow your vehicle. And by towing your vehicle, guess what, he gets to go inside it and inventory it.

Just something to think about. Sounds like the OP did a great job handling himself. Remember, there are jerks in every profession.

Oh BTW, if you get pulled over and you know the reason why, don't lie about it. I can't begin to tell you how many people I have let go by them just being honest. For ME, if a person is honest AND has INSURANCE then they most likely will leave with no ticket. If you lie and deny then probably not.

i quit asking people if they know why i pulled them over

i politely introduce myself, inform them why i stopped them, request #1 for license/reg/ins...if necessary request #2...at this point i go back to my car to run any info i have...when im done i return all paperwork to the driver...if he argues...i dont...and remind him of his court date...i will gladly explain the ticket if need be though...

obviously if i need to arrest that changes things...or if the spidey senses tingle...but a basic traffic stop with no ulterior motive...short, sweet, and too the point...no extraneous convo

yea, I mean, I bet I can go up to anyone and say "Hey buddy, you cut me off the other day and spun your tires like 6 times" and have them thinking. He didnt specify a day or place. I was really tempted to ask him "Do you remember where, when this happened?" because I was actually really curious.

It is so easy to spin your tires in our trucks while turning, sometimes I dont even notice it, especially if Im trying to make a quick turn. It is also likely to have cut someone off without even noticing it. Not to say that I am a reckless driver, I have never received a single ticket in my life.

He was probably having a bad day, but got me really paranoid that he's gonna be on the look out for me, especially since the mods he cited me on are really hard to fix:

    1. My wheels stick out because I have wide control arms from long travel. I dont run wheel spacers, and my tires arent ridiculously big (285s). I even spent money buying aftermarket fenders to make my wheels more flush.

    2. When I registered my vehicle in Arizona, they didnt even issue me a second license plate. I didnt really know until I came to SCU that Cali cars need a front plate.

I just hope this officer doesnt see me accidentally hop a tire while turning in the future, especially because Im running all pro leaf packs which hop like crazy

Thanks for all the replies, I just wanted to hear some input as to whether this was common or not, and whether I should be worried about that cop in the future. AFAIK, every other cop I've chatted with are really cool and dont have any problems with my truck or driving.
