Battery issue or what?

Video is of the 3rd start so stopped doing it now but anyways.
This is the second time the truck did this now. Only seems to happen if its started then stopped then started again.

Basically I went to move it into the driveway from the street so started, backed into the driveway then shut it off. Noticed I didn't move up the driveway enough so went to start it again.

Pushed the brake, pressed start, could hear it try and turn over but wouldn't start. I pressed start again to stop it from attempting to start, then started again. Struggled again but finally turned over.

Same thing happened last time.

after the first time I figured I'd film it to help show but of course didn't happen again.
Not sure what it could be as it started the first time no problem. The other time this happened it just hesitated a tiny bit then started but when I attempted to start again was when it really struggled.

In the video you can see it almost hesitates again before turning over.
I'd bring it to the dealer but without any idea of what it can be I'm sure they'll just take it in try and start it and give me the 'could not replicate' excuse, and be pricks and not even test the battery.
You can also see on the scan gauge that as soon as engine shuts off voltage drops to 12V, When I stopped the attempted start previously gauge was reading 11.7V, so I'm thinking a shit battery? Trucks only got 3500km on it, 2 months old.

At first thought a parasitic draw but given it starts the first time no problem then craps out I'm not sure. Otherwise never had a problem with it starting and driving, which is making me think the battery isn't holding a charge. Cranks once and without really having and driving or run time doesn't recharge enough? And I know if I go out and try it now it will start no problem.

Might be a battery issue then. I'd probably check the water levels (if it's not sealed) and top off as required before doing anything else.

Your battery is either shot or needs charged.
A charged battery in its " rest " stage without a surface charge at full charge will read 12.5-12.7 volts.
A weak battery is 12.0-12.1 volts. A shit battery is anything under 12V.
If you frequently short trip drive you may not be giving the battery time to charge. Few people know this but an alternator is not technically designed to CHARGE the battery but instead maintain it for a prolonged period through many cycles. Technically it does charge the battery but it's not a true deep charge. Periodically you should put the battery on a trickle charger at the lowest setting to maximize battery longevity.
Leaving a battery in an uncharged state for a long time will sulfate the battery and give you less available CCAs over all.
When you shut your truck off you still draw power for a little bit and what your seeing is the surface charge come off the battery.

Everybody uses a sealed battery now adays unless your maintaining golf carts...if you do run into a battery that needs the fluid topped up then buy an optima and quit fucking with distilled water and battery acid.

As it has never done this for the first start up or after a decent drive and what not.

Both times its done this was start move 10 feet, shut off, turn on again. all under a minute never really charged or anything.
But still odd that it's doing this and just checked quick does look like OEM battery has a cap for water.
Also tried it again and it did a slight hesitation.

I don't think anything is wrong with your battery... quit turning it off and on and you will be fine

Probably something to do with the fuel pump or the shutdown process. I noticed this happen to mine a couple times in the past. It is just circumstance imo

 

Turn your headlights on without the engine running for about 30 seconds to remove the surface charge.
Turn the headlights off and ignition off. Let it sit for 10 seconds.
Measure voltage. Check the chart.

haha, I know it only happens when its on then off, just makes me owrried some sort of battery issue and it will fail when I need it most like on a trail.

I know you are in Toronto so your conditions are a bit more extreme than mine. My dad's 2016 BMW X3 with 13000 kms was having major issues with gauges and panels turning off and it wasn't happy starting. I spoke with BMW about this and they said on their cars any distance under 5 km will lead to a loss of charge.

My dad's short trips plus the -1C weather locally apparently were too much for the system. My volt meter stated the battery was down to 12.2 volts.

I am wondering where the threshold is on our trucks.

 

haven't thought of it but the two times this happened last time and just now were both around -10, with a -20 wind chill.
wonder if that has something to do with it. and could be the really short drive doing it.

ya man appreciate it. And definitely will do so soon. We just got hit with a snow storm and rest of the week is like -25C with wind chill, so no not going to be going outside working on it right now.

I was thinking of going with an Odyssey battery. From what I understand dual battery set ups work better if both batteries are the same, so I'd need two AGM, and since I plan on doing the dual in the summer may as well start now. I've heard mixed things about optima, that they aren't as great as they used to be. Odyssey seems to be great for the money.

 

The really short drive is super hard on batteries and cold weather hurts battery capacity. My friend's friend had a Tesla that normally has a 300 km range and during the last blizzard he ran outta juice after 200 km and had to be towed the rest of the way. Needless to say he was a little pissed off.

 

Have you checked with the dealer? It's a new truck so should be under warranty. Don't think it's battery because it turned over normal when you went to restart it? And, once it's running the alternator basically takes over. Unless things have changed, once the truck is started, you can disconnect the battery and it will still run fine. Just my thoughts...

 

I always just buy from Walmart and take them back right before the free replacement expires (2 to 3 years). The low wage employees do not seem to give a single fuck. Phoenix heat really chews up batteries.

 

He said it starts once or twice then slow cranks. Yes an alternator will run the truck without the battery but it can " full field" the alternator and it's not good for it unless you feel like shortening its life.

 

I said above, I would gladly bring it to the dealer but given it only happened twice so far and I haven't gotten a video of it yet, if I bring it to them they'll just say cannot replicate and do nothing about it.
Lazy shits likely won't even test the battery.

Its when I restart that it does this. So I'm thinking battery isn't holding a charge and one start without any run time is causing the battery to not have enough juice left to start again.
