Trump to Roll Back Emissions Regs... Good for Tacoma?

Please, this is not supposed to turn into a political debate, but rather how the new administration might affect mid-size trucks. Mid-size trucks currently feel more of a squeeze from the EPA than their full-size counterparts.
GM currently loses about $10k on each Chevy Bolt they sell so that they can have CAFE credits to sell gas guzzling full size trucks. Full size trucks are the bread and butter of large automakers (maybe not Toyota so much), so smaller trucks are now left with leaf-blower engines (*couch* Tacoma 3.5 Atkinson Cycle V6 *cough*).
If regulations are rolled back, perhaps the hope of a more powerful engine in the Tacoma isn't such a pipe dream.

Hopefully this will stop the use of Ethanol in gasoline.

 

Im ok with my leaf blower V6 that gave me 23MPG this morning.

Remember the Hummer H2? That thing drank more gas than a Russian chugging Vodka.

 

this is all unstable. no manufacturer is going to change their long-term strategies from this. their strategies are world-wide and longer-term than this unstable nutcase country of ours. i'm trying to not say anything political here, but basically the investment and strategies for these mulitnational corps isn't based on any current administration with limited time in office and a possible change of strategy just a few years down the line.

 

I am excited about this sort of stuff. I use to believe in climate change, now not so much. I think its a way for government to make power moves and of course money. Its def has been weird with the weather. I just hope things get better for everyone.

government sucks because they protect the big three by stumping us from getting the diesel motors in our small Japanese trucks

anyone who thinks they put regulations on these jap import trucks because of the environment and not because of the lame big three is crazy and miss informed

my dream at thing point is putting in one of these 4 cylinder diesel Banks motors that some Italian guy designed for banks, sadly only if it didn't cost me the price of another truck...

 

Yeah Toyota is definitely not going to drop a thirsty V8 in the Tacoma now just because they think Trump will be easier on them. Perhaps a slightly different approach of maybe a larger displacement V6 making it back into a future Tacoma could be on the table. But this is Toyota, who redesigns their trucks once a decade if we are lucky.

Seatbelt Mike has been on the record saying the reason Toyota won't touch diesels is because of the emissions regulations and the subsequent cost. A change in this could have them re-evaluating.

 

I think the ethanol lobbies are too strong for that to happen. Maybe I could get back the 250 RPMs I lost in my boat at WOT?

It's always been subject to change. I would hope their strategy accounted for that.

Rolling back emission regs are not good in general. Any push to move away from fossil fuel dependency is good my mind. I'm not saying overnight or over the course of 5 years, but moving away from gas is going to be forced at some point in the future. I don't have a 3rd gen but have driven a few. Difference from the 4.0? yes, no argument there. New engine adequate for vast majority? I would argue yes.

 

Won't make a bit of difference. Big petroleum is in it for the long haul and 4/8 years of a Trump presidency is hardly a blip on the radar. They understand the pendulum swings both ways and try and stay in the center from a policy perspective as much as possible.

 

IMO the 3.5L, just like the 4.0L before it, is perfectly adequate for a truck with the payload/towing rating of a Tacoma. What would a larger gas engine get us (ignoring the diesel argument as that doesn't appear likely)? Without reworking the current chassis the truck isn't suited to carrying additional weight or towing more weight and at that point you might as well step up into a full size.

The reality is the majority of Tacoma owners don't need the additional power and it doesn't make sense for Toyota to spec an engine beyond what the chassis is realistically suited for. They got it more or less right in the needs vs. want department.

Well, it exists whether you believe in it or not, unfortunately.

 

Automakers have invested so much in fuel efficiency tech that they're not going to pivot just under the vague promise that the US alone might dial back emissions regs. (and possibly temporary, at that.). Automakers play a world-wide long game, and at the end of the day people still want reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles. Gas probably won't always be as cheap as it is today, and GM and Ford aren't going to abandon efficiency. They want/need to be ready next time gas is $3.50 a gallon and a 2mpg difference on the window sticker is the difference between selling a truck or seeing the consumer buy from the competitor.

Couldn't have said it better. If people are unhappy with what a mid size truck can do they should step it up to a full size.
