Has anyone heard of any recalls on Windshields? My Windshield on my Brand new Tacoma cracked while driving home from work last week. What started off as a tiny speck turned into an 9in crack! Had to replace it! Today another tiny rock hit the windshield and guess what? Yup another crack! This one however should be able to be repaired. I spoke with a few repair companies and all have replaced hundreds from this model. Whats up Toyota?!

Shit happens? Quit following so close? Don't follow dump trucks? I know bunches of people that have never had a crack or chip.

Here in AZ they are very common. Doesn't matter what type of vehicle you're following. Have seen them crack my wife's 4runner window just driving in normal traffic with regular cars around us.

    You're kidding, right?

You sound like my neighbor. They took their car to the dealership raising hell because the rear doors wouldn't open from the inside. The child safety locks were on.

You don't drive in Colorado winter. CDOT dumps sand on the roads and along with that sand, little rocks are dumped as well. Nearly impossible not to get hit by rocks here.

Should have had the tiny speck looked at and/or repaired before it turned into a 9 inch crack. Rocks fly up from tires. Glass isn't invincible. You just got crappy luck. And of course auto glass companies have replaced "hundreds" of Tacoma windshields. It's a popular model.

There is actually a pretty big thread on here somewhere about the windshields breaking, some people had them hit by something first while others just had them break from the cold temps. I cannot remember from reading it if there was a better aftermarket one or not though.

haha. You don't live in Fl. The land of sand. And rocks. And dump trucks. Learn to keep your distance and you'll be just fine.

Even keeping your distance. You get hit from crap falling from the highway above you. Absolutely nothing you can do. A coworker had his windshield shattered because a plow went on an overpass above and flung a ton of snow off while he was driving underneath.

just do yourself a favor and don't have Safelite touch your truck. They manufacture their own glass so they can undercut the competition and the quality of glass is sub-par and not advised by Toyota for use in their vehicles...plus their technicians usually do hack work.

I can only speak from my experience as a driver for over 25 years. I've owned various makes and models (GMC van, Ford Mustang, Honda Civics, Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Xterra to name a few) and have been lucky enough never to have a windshield crack on me until my Tacoma. Those vehicles had lots of chips but they never seem to spread.

Had to replace one OEM windshield and just 2 days ago had a stone hit my replacement OEM windshield and 1 hour later (and before I could get it repaired) there is a 4 inch crack.....

I know 2 other people who own Tacoma's and their windshields are cracked to hell too - all in the same spot about 6-8 inches from the bottom.

Not sure if this is due to poor glass or the structure of the truck....or????

most aftermarket glass manufacturers are also the companies that make OEM glass....it's just that you're paying extra to have the "TOYOTA" stamp printed in the corner. Take a look at your OEM windshield...it's likely made by companies such as AGC, LOF, Pilkington, etc. They're made to the same standards as OEM. Safelite's brand (SGC) is the exception.

There have been issues from the Toyota assemblies in relation to the urethane on 2nd gen trucks. The start/stop points of the urethane bead didn't blend together and caused a hairline gap where wind noise could sometimes be heard at 60+mph speeds. Aside from that, it's incredibly rare to have a stress crack in Tacoma windshields. I say this as I've been an auto glass tech with Toyota for over 11 years and have replaced and repaired more than my fair share of glass.

Yah, I've heard anecdotally on these forums that Pilkington is the OEM supplier for Toyota windshields.

If only I can provide a better quality manufacturer/supplier for my next windshield....

From what I've been told by my Toyota contacts out in Torrence, CA....the brand they used can vary year to year based on cost and availability (contractual stuff I'm sure)

Probably true - as long as a manufacturer can meet the spec and fulfill orders/quantity on time I'm sure Toyota (or any other company) would just go with anyone who is the cheapest.

Bought my '17 Limited last Tuesday. Somewhere between leaving the dealership and pulling into my driveway, my windshield cracked. The truck had 34 miles on it. Immediately drove it back to the dealership. Luckily, they replaced it on Monday (with an oem) at no charge to me. The invoice I signed was for $888.xx.

Ive wondered about that myself, I know a lot of them have that bad front body mounts and maybe that is twisting the body in a bind and putting pressure on the windshields.
