Tailgate theft....How to prevent it....

Does it affect the performance of the camera? mine is perfectly set up from factory and I'm not sure if I want to mess with it.

 

I installed this and works great! I tried to take the tailgate off with the clamp attached and it was a pain. For the clamp, you can get them at Lowes or Home Depot if you have those around. I used some plumbing rubber under the clamp so it wouldn't scratch the paint. Great mod!

 

10 months and still going Chris. Not bad.
Cheap easy 'mod'. People should buy a cable combination bike lock and thread it through their spare tires to keep them from walking off too!..

Found this yesterday and Wally Weird here didn't have them, neither did Advance Auto, but Auto zone did, and it worked GREAT...got the EZ20 size(I think) and had to pull the key off w/ a pair of pliers, but it sure was simple; I stuck the key in the console in case I ever have to have the tail gate camera worked on...thanks again...

I just did this mod today. $2.99 at Autozone and it comes with the triangle looking end. Works great! +rep to OP

 

I am looking for information about the WATCHDOG tailgate lock.
Has anybody purchased on or does anyone know about them.
I would like to find a good way to protect my gate and have been told the hose clamps are easly pryed off, and they also look Jecky.

 

Great post Chris! Unfortunately, I read it a day late and $1900 short. Stolen right in my driveway. Irritating. I had no idea they came off so easily. I will do the mod and electronic lock. Dyna or Pop & Lock? Any opinion? I am also installing the door pin as a fifth door. Can I get a tailgate bailout? I'll deal with the gas pedal.

 

To get to the camera you don't have to take off the tailgate. You just remove the plastic cover on the inside of the tailgate.

 

Given enough time, if someone wants your tailgate they are going to get it. Period. There is nothing you can do--especially if you want to use your truck at all.

You could weld your tailgate shut. Thieve's solution: they unbolt the bed from the frame and take the whole thing.

The hose clamp does one thing very well--it keeps casual thieves from being able to steal the tailgate quickly. Like all security, it encourages them to move on to an easier target.

 

Will someone please steal mine?? My lovely ex wife didn't like the outcome of the divorce and keyed mine nice and deep. I've been hoping for a rear end or a theft of the tailgate so I can get insurance to get me a new one!

Texas! And I wont be at northpark mall this weekend. Heck, maybe I will take the tail gate off and lay it in the back of my truck. For aerodynamic purposes of course

 

Put a vinyl wrap on it. Costs only $50 for the tailgate. I would put a huge vinyl wrap of the Laker girls!

AS you can see, it took all of 10 seconds to remove my tailgate.

Now, In the Cheap/easy mods section, there is a ton of info on how to prevent this. If wanting to use a hose clamp, this is what you will need:

1. SAE #20 clamp. This clamp is for diameters of 3/4" to 1 3/4". 18mm to 44mm if your Canadian or from some other country that isnt on the same page as us Americans. You can use a screw driver, or a small socket to install these. OR, you can pick up "E-Z Hose clamps from your favorite Walmart. They have a "Key" on the nut of the hose clamp that can be removed,and is uses a 5 point head so a screw driver or socket will not work on these. Amazon also sells these clamps online.

You may have to use a pair of pliers to remove the Key from the clamp. If it doesnt come right off, get some pliers and pullit off with those. Afterward, the key will come right off when used to remove and reinstall the clamp in the future.

I didnt remove anything to show how EASY AS PIE this is to do. Now, Go out and do this. $2.54 is cheap as opposed to replaceing a tailgate.

I would have paid a grip for your tailgate with scratches. Mine was stolen Feb. 1. $1,963 to replace it. $120 to "install" LMAO! Takes 6 seconds to steal it....how hard can it be to put the new one on? 10 seconds? My insurance company does not send a check anymore, they pay the dealer directly. I would have been satisfied with cash and a scratched gate.

 

In this gap you run a SS cable or a plastic coated cable through this and the sheet metal gap through the bed (where the gap is going underneath the bed) and then and lock same with some squeeze locks or cable ties with red locktite .
