After a couple of trips wheeling and getting dirty, I am not pleased with the amount of dirt getting into my filter box.

I'm looking at the Safari Snorkel, but it's just so damn bulky. Any other options or suggestions?

Just pull your filter and knock it on the ground a few times. Raising your air intake a few feet isn't going to make enough difference to matter.

You can buy a lot of OEM filters for the price of a snorkel. I've been doing this $hit for along time and never once did I wish I had one.

Edit: Snorkels are a level 9 on the ExBrodition scale. :militarypress:

True. I never had this issue with any of the 2nd gens I owned and the intake entry point from the fender is the same design.

I'm more concerned with sucking water into it more than anything. When I replaced my filter, it was soaking wet.

Are you driving in water over your hood?

I would do a rear dif mod before I would install a snorkel for "water". Your axles will suck in water and your electronics will shutdown before you really need a snorkel.

No water over the hood, but there's some pretty deep river crossings I've encountered where the water is deeper than the tires.

Rear diff breather mod was done within hours of bringing all of my Tacomas home from the dealership.

    Love it!

I have seen some people using Hilux snorkels and just making them fit, they are a bit smaller.

Go to 6:36 Is that still too bulky?

Snorkels don't keep much of the dirt out. Especially if you are following others.

If you are doing long distance travel in a group though the desert it would be wise to supplement the snorkel with a prefilter.

Not much desert out here on the east coast though. We get alot of rain which makes for deep water on some trails. I've seen three people hydro-lock their motor over the past year.

Sounds like a good reason to get a snorkel to me, if you hydro lock your engine you're going to regret not spending the money and an afternoons worth of time to install a snorkel.

Do snorkels really prevent water from entering the engine?

In theory, yes. As long as the tubing for the intake tract inside the engine bay is on properly and sealed from water.

If you seal all of the connections completely and any extra holes in the intake it will.

I only snorkel if I can get the biggest ugliest snorkel on the market. Oh wait, that's the safari snorkel.

Only if your dealership is pretty cool. You go in with any engine or mechanical issues and they see that snorkel...They might be inclined to say you off-broded too hard and decline warranty coverage.
