Not the tailgate, but I woke up one morning and my tail lights and spare were gone! Now I have the spare lock.

After reading about the hose clamp deterent here, I did something similar to slow down a tailgate theif. I used a large zip tie.

Pretty sad if they can't flip a burger but can turn some wrenches to get a tailgate off...

No tools needed to steal a tailgate. Flipping a burger however does require a tool.

So true. My buddy stole a tail gate when he was in high school.

His Catalytic Converter was stolen off his 4-Runner twice in the last 6 months.

We are having a lot of trouble with tailgate theft at one of the shopping malls up here. Mine is safe as my truck isn't a mall crawler!!!!!! Seriously though, the easiest and chaepest anti-theft option is the ole hose clamp routine, and thanks to the fellers on here I have that mod done!!!!!! ;~)

My Undercover locks it well so far. Still need to put a zip tie or hose clamp on for those days it's not installed.

Dog, can you explain to the newbie (ME) how you would use a tie wrap and why it would be "better" necessarily? Also, how you would use both in conjunction with each other?

I'm sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere - I'm still finding my way around.

    Thanks

i have a 2010 with the camera.....the saleman (really cool honest guy, yeah go figure) didnt know if the tailgate came off since its wired and didnt want to chance damaging anything showing how it comes off. Ive had my tailgates off my old trucks, maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years.....so i might clamp it IF this years model is removable....hahahahah 1 day old and its in the garage. were getting 12-24" of snow today....had to buy the 4x2......SIGH!!! :) so i cant even go over the truck....

its just a regular hose clamp you place around the pivot point on the removable side.

Isn't funny how, not long ago, everyone was taking their tailgates off and replacing them with those nets?!?!?!! There must've been quite a few tailgates just lyin' around back then!

Anyway, I am still trying to figure out why the zip tie is "better". Perhaps that's from an aesthetic perspective. But I would think that it would be easier to remove the zip tie than it would be to remove the hose clamp. I can see how both are "best".

i have to see where it unclips from. the valance panel that the wiring goes thru on the bottom of the bed, its clipped in. looks like a PIA to remove from the panel and that takes time too, which might deter a theif.
I have a beater truck i bring to go shopping and out to get work (self employed) this truck was bought to do long highway runs and go out for a cruise. no sense wearin and tearin such a beautiful truck.

some heavy duty zipties are a one time use type and so thick its impossible to break. A hose clamp, a theif can undo with a screwdriver....IF he reads what we do to ours and brings the proper tools. A zip tie, well its a one time use type, you have to replace it everytime you remove your gate on purpose :)

It’s hard to break but easy to cut; a wire cutter or a similar tool would cut through it like butter.
