Awesome advice all the way around thank you guys. This seems like something I can tackle myself and not have to go to the dealer with.

Getting in and through the main little town is what's hell. And then all the easily accessible wildflower areas are crowded. Check their Facebook for latest updates. Try to get there before 7am or the night before

I was there this past weekend with some other tacoma's too. So much traffic getting into Coyote canyon area. Camped at Sheep canyon, but also wheeled a little bit in that Fish creek area till Diablo dropoff. Good times.

All 4x4 Tacomas, desert bound or otherwise should have an electronic air pump, such as the MV50 and a dial gauge that reads less than 10 psi accurately. A tire plug repair kit belongs in the compartment under the seat, too.

You are now covered for getting yourself unstuck or deflating before getting stuck. Fixing rock or nail punctures on the truck is added insurance your time will be worry-free.

I also have a tow strap in the bed compartment, used often to pull out other trucks, never mine. A small tool kit, jumper cables, bailing wire, and duct tape round off the standard gear in my 2010 DC 4WD OFF ROAD TRD Truck.

Can you just go off a trail and find a spot to camp?

Yep, just have to follow the laws of state parks, mainly keep your fire inside a metal container (washer tub works great). Cannot harvest wood there so truck it in, no pallets! Be careful this time of year, lots of critters waking up & crawling around, also don't be mad if people drive near your camp along a trail. Otherwise, go have fun! :fistbump:

Camp anywhere, but leave no trace of your camp when you leave, simple! In the park, you must only drive on designated roads, but there are many dirt roads. Going up Split Mountain (Fish Creek) is great.

Is that over off Rockhouse Trail? This area: https://goo.gl/maps/TTDLqT1NtCB2

If so I drove through that lake bed once and continued on about an hour north up the trail. The entrance off highway S22 was pretty crowded with RV's all camping on the nice flat hard pack dirt, but once you get to or past the lakebed it was pretty much empty, but it's also a tighter area with not much open space to set up.

Hidden Springs is in there and before the springs is a trail up the side of the canyon to the Solstice Stones.

    Yup that's the one

Think a suv with a trailer could get past the lakebed? Haven't been. If anything I may tell the families to park near the rv's then explore to see if the could turn a little pop up trailer around.

The road all the way to the lake is graded & maintained, no problem for anything with wheels to get to. The only problem with the lakebed would be mud, it was bad when I was there, I had to throttle down to get my 2wd through it and I was fish tailing a good 50 yards. Once past the lakebed it's a rougher narrow trail but still something anything but a Civic could handle. If we're only talking a pop-up camper then it shouldn't be a problem unless it's a huge mud hole.
