Like others have said, this is an obvious scam, Geoff. Don't let your self get screwed! If you let that check clear, just about when get gets his nice new table, you will be getting a call from your bank letting you know that you just cashed a fake check and make your way down to the bank with X amount of dough.. Beware!

I just got my truck of CL. At the time I contacted the seller he had given up on finding a real seller and had heard every line in the book. Seller beware.

If it smells like shit, it probably is. I wouldn't take an out of state 1k check. Cash talks. Who'd pay a grand up front for a table sight unseen anyway?

Cash or money order, checks can easily clear at the time deposited, and circle the world and come back a week later no good. I'd cancel if you have other interest.

I work for a bank and I see these scams on a daily basis! First of all a money order isn't really much safer than an actual check. There are plenty of fake money orders or cashier's checks that they will send. I have seen even more fake money orders or cashier's checks in these scams than regular checks. I wouldn't accept any of these. If you do accept one of these make sure your bank holds the item to make sure it clears the issuing bank. Most knowledgeable bank employees know of the current scams going around through Craigslist and Ebay. You need to be upfront with your bank if you think it might be a bad check so they don't hold it against you if the item charges back. Please do not allow them to wire the funds into your account either because they will have your account number. I would recommend either paypal of cold hard cash!

Another clear sign of a scam is a letter in broken english, Every car I have ever listed I will get emails from someone who writes in broken english. Watch ebay too. Last week I saw a 2008 Tacoma 4 wheel drive with 27,000 miles on it liste din really good condition. Asking price was $5700.00 dollars. The add said to not reply via ebay but to use their personal aol address. I immediatey contacted ebay and the add was removed.

Geoff it's a scam bro! TRUST ME! Your bank will cash the check and funds will be deposited into your account. Two or three weeks later the bank will find out the check is a fake and will reverse the deposit. TRUST ME.

I deal with CL all the time.

    I have two rules.

    Local pick up only.

    Cash only.

That set is too nice to CL imo. I'd find a quality consignment furniture shop if I were you.

Just sayin' is all I'm sayin'...

Its a scam. My girlfriend had the same thing happen, she received the check and all. But she was very aprehensive. She took it to the bank and it cleared, but she just had them hold it. A week later they called and said it was a fraudulent check.

Whoever sends you the check can put a stop payment on it and get your account info. They can steal your identitiy and clean you out.
