Yeah, I agree, I use mine as a truck, and haul with it as well. The 4.0 is about standard performance that you'd need for a truck. Anything less, and I know I wouldn't be satisfied.

same thing happens to me when i tow my horse trailer. I believe this truck needs either 300hp from the factory or 10-15% better mpgs

It's definitely the wrong truck for hauling trailers, but I would say that about ALL mini trucks. If you spend any time hauling at all, get a full size.

Yes, torque @ 4700 rpm is useless. Most of the max torque needs to be accessible between 2000 and 4000 rpm to be useful... in my opinion.

To each his own. When I was towing a lot, I switched from Toyota to a Silverado. It was a much better tool for the job. If the trailer is under 3000 pounds with a light tongue weight, Tacoma does fine.

Is that from a BMW? They should have used a carbon fiber drive shaft since they can handle up to 3000HP and weigh half as much which is why dragsters use them.

It is. The automatic transmission is most of the problem. Lack of low end torque sensation and numb throttle will be mostly tuned out. Once orange virus releases the tune for our trucks people will love this motor.

Out of curiousity do people with a stick who tow have this no torque issue? I only put my dirt bike (so far until more toys come to me) and ice been in the mountains driving up with it and its whicked

The torque issue exists because of the low displacement engine. No amount of tuning is going to help that.

The only ways to gain torque is with higher displacement, or forced induction. Period.

Agreed there's replacement for displacement. Those calling the 3.5 a minivan engine, sadly hit the nail on the head. :(

Amen brother -- I had an 08 DC 4.0 with the TRD off road package and loved it. My 2016 DC sport with the hard box cover can move pretty good on the Hwy, off the line its the transmission that shifts like a slug. I still love it if I want to fly I get in my 99" Vette that keeps me satisfied..
