why is it that sometimes i can be driving and in first gear i can disengage the transmission without my clutch? i can also take it out of 5th gear everytime that i am coasting in it without engaging the clutch!

you guys already told me that its because everything lines up but is there anything more to it than that?

If there is the zero or the right amount of load on the transmission you can disengage the gears without the clutch. If you don't hear any grinding it's probably fine. Used to do it in an old Honda on occasion.

That's all there is to it.

    Lots.
RPM matching. It's all about hitting the right RPM and you can do it in and out of any gear. It's not exactly bad for the engine (if you do it right) but it's not good either.

I always do that when coming to a stop. I just leave it in the gear im in, wait untill the RPM drops to about 1000 and it will pop out of gear without the clutch very easily.

In a standard transmission there are synchronizers between the gears. When you shift, as you engage the next gear, a sleeve (for a lack of a better term) rides over the synchronizer for said gear. There is a taper on the synchronizer which aids in it slowing down as the sleeve slides over it to mesh with the next gear. Disengaging the clutch reduces the friction caused during this process because the transmission isn't being forced to turn with the speed of the flywheel. At certain speeds, the synchronizers' speeds are compatible and things "fall into place" smoothly. These are the times when one can easily shift without a clutch.

When synchronizers become worn, even with the use of the clutch, the process will often cause grinding.

Excellent description. The new 370Z even has software that rev matches the engine for you so you can down shift without using the heel/toe technique.

Used to do it w/ the bike all the time when rowing through the gears/accelerating. Never tried it w/ the truck though.
