I agree with you. My truck is worth about 12k tops now.

The problem with your nice clean 07/08 theory is that where I live no such beast exists. These frames cannot withstand north eastern climates.

They need to move them from here, it would still cost less.

I agree. But one issue would be that frame wouldn't last. I thought the whole issue was inferior corrosion protection from the factory. I'm hoping my new frame is made differently. Although I see it's still made in Mexico from the sticker on the side of the frame.

I bought a professional rust proofing gun/various wands and a gallon of rust check. I want this frame to last.

To play devil's advocate (and risk the flames of doing so in a biased community) what if the problem is poor maintenance in an adverse environment? I read a post here or elsewhere by an owner in Canada who had regularly washed and "oiled" (IIRC) the frame of his Tacoma for several years, and had no rust issues.

I do not mean to absolve Toyota from an issue that seems to be unique to them--I have commented here and elsewhere that the nature of the corrosion, the extensive massive deep flaking, reminded me of the absolute crap Asian CRS we saw in the 70s--however many/most photos of badly rusted frames I have seen, here and elsewhere, show damage that did not happen overnight and was arguably the result of problems that had been festering and screaming for help for a number of years.

Being a "newbee" Tacoma owner I do not have an extensive history. Does anyone know if any serious analysis of the frames been undertaken? Are they fabricated of steel with inferior corrosion resistance, as compared to other makers products; or is Toyota just the victim of its being the "big fish in the pond", i.e. its own considerable market share?

We have 100's of trucks at my work. I can show you pictures from a 2003 gmc, that never saw any rust proofing, and lived in the woods it's whole life. The frame is a light rust colour here and there, but no bad flaking to the degree of my last 2 tacomas

While I agree that rust proofing is beneficial, and I do all my personal vehicles annually, the Tacoma indeed has an inferior frame. My frame was like Swiss cheese and the sheet metal looks like new. Now a frame is a lot thicker than sheet metal, and nothing was rust proofed so all metals were exposed to the same elements.
The body on my 2004 was mint! And well you can see the frame!

This is my concern, in my career I have seen tons and tons of rusted steel and to the best of my recollection the only corroded steel I have seen exhibiting the degree of degradation shown in the Tacoma frames was with extremely cheap and of questionable origin 60s and 70s Asian (OK "Chinese", there I have said it)) cold rolled steel--the way it flake away in sheets it's almost as though it was "hot laminated" CRS processed at too low a temperature to properly fuse..

To be generous this may be a failure of their engineers to properly understand the nature of the harsh environment in the" rust belt states, though it is somewhat appalling that the issue continued for so long (does anyone know if '12+ Tacomas are immune?).

In the 70s European auto makers used a melamine based paint that was quite resistant to the components of European air pollution--it was also almost equally susceptible to North American air pollutants, and chalked and faded in just a couple years or less. Not as devastating physically as having a frame rot out from under you, but it dd piss a whole lot of people off...

Well My 2 Cents for what its worth ... I added this many many pages ago. It was met with disagreement as it probably will now. Steel in itself is a recipe with it's associated cost. Rail road tracks will last, a lifetime as will stainless steel. Eventually they will rust. Cast Iron will rust and flake. Chevy Vega's had front fenders that could not last a couple years.

As was just stated, The frames are crap on the Tacos but the bodies last better than most. Yes, the "finishing" and "rust coating" definitely makes a difference... but when the crappy metallurgy underneath starts to see the environment, all bets are off. The Tacoma frames were crap steel.

I'm in a salt belt as well being on the East coast. Just bought an 06 Tacoma that had the frame and underbits all re-done two weeks ago by the previous owner. Once he got it back, he sold it.

He said it's a better truck today then it was 3 years ago when he bought it and I'd have to agree! Fully loaded access cab for $8k Cdn. 225000 km on it. I couldn't be more pleased with that deal.

Anyone who would disagree with this is either a) a Toyota fanboy or b) lives in a southern, dry climate.

I am neither and fully agree.

The only thing you missed out on was the 5-11 months of a free rental to terrorize! I think that was one of the best parts of my frame replacement. Haha

All Toyota needs to do is up the nickel content in their spec steel.

I work on a lot of 20-30's fords. The nickel content in both the steel and cast iron is very high. 90 year old body panels that haven't seen paint since the 1950's don't rust almost at all by comparison.

Well you guys seem to keep yapping about coatings, they are just a band aid. Fix the problem don't cover it up.

ha.. no kidding right... i wish... ended up ordering from an out of state dealer as my local dealers have A) Pulled the parts list from online, and B) always quote high prices... shipping ended up being less than the local tax. i'll take it.

Hey, Guys! Was looking at this thread and just had a conversation with one of the Attorneys working this lawsuit this morning, so I just joined up here today as a new member, so I could pass along some information that may ease some minds.
I had the recall work done last February, and they did the CRC coating. Since then, I have had large flakes of it coming off, with sheets of rust attached to the back of it! Not inspiring any confidence here.
The Attorney this morning said that even if the recall work was already done, and the coating applied, as in my case, the settlement will allow unlimited re-inspections of the frame, until 12 years from the first vehicle "in-service" date. The perforation holes have to be at least 10 mm to qualify for frame replacement. He also stated some of common areas he's heard of rusting through are below passenger side door, and around right engine mount.
Last thing... thanks to all of you posting pics of your rust-throughs. Helps us all know where to look. Good luck all!
