If I was looking to lease a car or I was a used car dealer, I'd care about residual value. As a purchaser of new vehicles, I care about resale value. I paid 16,200 for my 99 tacoma and sold it 4 years later for $13,000. I paid $26,000 for my 2007 TRD OR and sold it FIVE years later for $23,000. Both purchased new, and negotiated the best I could

The used 2016's I'm seeing are listed for a bigger drop in value than the loss I took on both of mine after 4/5 years, and that is based on the prices advertised, you may even be able to negotiate even lower. I am assuming a drop in value based on what I have been able to get quoted for new 16s and 17s over the past year. Again, not clear proof that the 3rd gens have worse resale, but they clearly due in my neck of the woods compared to my previous experience.

But even with this greater depreciation, a Tacoma will still have better resale than almost any other vehicle out there.

I'm no expert at this, but what exactly does ECT do and is it bad for the truck to turn it on all the time?

First off, I am kidding, ECT does make the truck run better with the shitty trans in it. Supposedly, the trans learns your drivig behavior, whatever the fuck that means, and no, leaving it on wont hurt it, some pwople have actually modded it to stay on. Good luck bro.

There are a lot of folks using the term "Turd-Gen" now out in the open on these forums. Have the mods lighted up and don't consider it a bannable trigger word? :D

Well, I heard that it helped in some way but wasn't sure on the extent. Most newer vehicles have computers that track your driving behavior and compensate to either give you better fuel economy or adjust how the vehicle accelerates. It does alot more also but again, I'm not an expert.

I haven't been on these forums long. I have a 2017 Toyota tacoma and came from a 2016 gmc canyon diesel. There is absolutely nothing about this tacoma that I can really complain about. Of coarse, I did read up on the truck and test drove before buying, so I knew how it behaved. I'm enjoying it much better than the canyon. One reason is that it actually feels like a truck! I don't want some cozy little sedan. Noise in the cabin or a rougher ride is fine because I'm a man!! Lol. Anyway like I said, I haven't been here long but it seems to me like there are many people that simply can't obtain this awesome looking ride so they feverishly scour the Internet for bad things to say so they feel better about themselves. Am I wrong? I mean, why even post this? It's obvious that most simply love their truck. Just look around here! Don't be a little bitch.*mods edit this if needed.

Try it out, I drive with mine on all the time, I am coming from a F150 with a V6 twin turbo though, so I like that power to the pedal.......

I as well, had the F150 ecoboost, then a corolla, then the tacoma. The only thing I disliked about the ecoboost (enginewise) was the turbo lag...but what do you expect. Good stuff man, cheers.

LOL. I won't, I picked up a Land Cruiser instead, because I want to enjoy driving. But, when you say: "I was a little put off by it, but I got over it." out of one side of your mouth, and they say the truck has plenty of power out of the other, you are skirting over the main issue with this truck. You got over the fact the truck lacks torque or low end power. And that is fine, my point from my first post is we shouldn't have to settle for a truck with the powerband of a minivan in disguise (Highlander) or a Passat.

I've never seen a group of people more butthurt over the failure of a car manufacturer to design to customers wants.

Right on brother, me too. They say this transmission learns my driving habits.......I will teach it to hate me! Then Toyota can put a new one in for me under warranty, fuck em.

Run it and don't worry. As best as I can tell, it raises the shift points and keeps you in a lower gear for longer. It'll feel more responsive (which it should if it's keeping you in a lower gear) and in some cases, depending on your driving, MPGs don't seem to take much of a hit.

I have not skirted over the issue. I've stated exactly that's how this truck was designed. It's how it is, if one can't make peace with that, they shouldn't get the truck. I've made peace with it, the truck runs fine, it just needs RPMs to make power. I'm okay with that.

Mini-vans have low RPM torque.... this is much more like a light weight sports car engine where you don't need torque as much and you want HP.

Yes, you're wrong. Many of us paid a premium price for a truck that was a huge step backwards from previous gens and, as such, have every right to complain about them just as much as those who love them have every right to lavish them with praise.

I completely understand what you're saying, but in my opinion this engine/transmission combination and the higher rpm's it has to produce makes the truck noisier and far less efficient than previous generations. And most of us recognized this immediately when test driving the vehicle but were told that the transmission would improve after it and learned our driving habits. That turned out to be a complete falsehood and multiple transmission updates have not corrected this problem

Exactly, this engine makes sense in a car, makes sense if they use it in a lexus. But a 4000 lb truck? The low end torque doesn't exist at all. You need to drive the truck like a sports car, cruising not too far below the powerband. The only saving grace is the manual transmission...I can't even imagine what you auto guys are going through. 2nd gear can't even handle a pull at 10mph. Have to downshift to 1st if you don't want to get slammed from behind.

    If you say so.

    Highlander:
    263 lb-ft @4700 RPM
    Sienna
    263 lb-ft @ 4700 RPM
    Tacoma
    265 lb-ft @ 4600 RPM

No, the Tacoma power train is just like a minivans. Clearly "I was a little put off by it, but I got over it" and "that's how this truck was designed." must mean I must defend my purchase until the end of time, no matter what!

Your responses fit my point from my first post to a T!

Now the 4th Gen 4.7 V8 4Runner, now that was a good powertrain for a truck. 306 ft lbs of torque at 3400 rpms, transmission shifted when it was supposed to and I still got 17 mpg combined, with no lack of power.

Good luck with your sports car Tacoma, LOL.

3K rpm seems really high at 65mph.
I'm thinking of it this way, 6th gear at 3K rpms, MPG would be shit. Something is off here.
