snatch blocks are handy and cheap way to double up pulling power on a winch. even better if you can rig it to a second anchor that is not your vehicle

out in the desert in lots of mud. we would be doubling up on someones bumper, no trees around. We ended needing to tie 4 rigs together, second to last pulling and last tied since his winch rope broke.

We had lots of snatch blocks if we had trees around, but most people should check their snatch block and all gear behind the block (tree strap, shackles) ratings to be twice your weight at WLL. most dont carry the correct gear, I didnt for a year and finally do.

Sounds good, it's been years since I've been up there past February so I can never remember where the snow melt is. Thanks, might have to see if we can change reservations to get closer to all the snow. Don't want to be lugging the 8 month old back and forth to Twain Harte all the time.

Haha. I've lived in the area my whole life and have never seen as many people as I've seen the last few years. Trashing the place too.

Growing up near twain harte I used to just sled in my neighborhood. Now with kids and living in Sonora it makes my skin crawl thinking of joining the crowds. Maybe I just need to get more creative.

Or just teach my kids to ski and skip sledding.

we would have been putting twice the weight on the point of snatch attachment. We didnt need it for the single rig, we needed it for the multiple pull and someone is going to lose a bumper mount point...

yeah i hear ya on that. always good to have gear that is rated for more than you think you'll need, cause that's usually when you'll need it haha! My buddy built a ground anchor for times when there isn't any good anchor points. check it out if you're bored sometime. stinger ground anchor

I suited up in a tyvek coverall and went under.
Skids are the only thing left. Rear bumper was the worst.

I should prob start a tread, but this is a good read to understand the loads associated with snatch blocks before you decide where you rig one up to. Then finding the load ratings of your gear and buying gear with WLL's to cover all possible usage.

    http://www.iti.com/pro-rigger-mike-parnell/bid/48983/Block-Tackle-Rigging-Snatch-Blocks

    http://www.thecrosbygroup.com/html/en-US/calc/snatchblockrigcalc.htm

The sad part is, you find this rigging tutorial on the second page of a google search, all the first page is tutorials from a lot of schmo's that say nothing about the loads after the block. You think you are being safer, but you are creating a even more dangerous situation if you skimped on all your gear because you wanted those fancy expensive wheels instead.

If you place a shitty tree strap or shitty shackle from Amazon to the tree strap and then the shackle (that I hope is rated properly for your weight) you can easily be sending a flying shackle at your windshield.

Probably should start a thread on this lol

yep a lot of people don't realize you double the load on the attachment point. and 3/4" shackles aren't really that strong, most are less than 10K. we started carrying soft shackles with 30K+ ratings. lot stronger, plus no flying metal :)

yeah I have two soft shackles and finally used them enough last weekend to be confident with them (finally a believer). I have a big crosby just for snatch use, but may start leaving that weight at home and get a few more soft shackles

On that note, I will prob see if I can have my D ring mounts on my bumper rounded so they dont wear my soft shackles. Thats my last worry.
