Surging at a Stoplight

My 06 Prerunner TRD w/ an automatic has a peculiar issue and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

When stopped at a light for an extended period it feels like my Taco downshifts and surges forward a bit. I have to push on the brakes my firmly to keep from lurching forward a bit. This happens after sitting at a light about 15 to twenty seconds. My Taco has done this since it was new. Sometimes it is annoying and I wonder if this is indeed a malfunction.

Please forgive my timing on this issue.

Hold on there man, he is not crying. He is just asking a question. No where in there did he complain about it or call it a POS or insult your manhood. He is doing the right thing, asking first and geting informed.

As for the surging I beleive it is the a/c compressor or pump kicking on and off, it happens to all of us, so far seems normal.

 

It happens whether the air conditioning is on or off with my TACO. But after 15 to 20 seconds. There are occassions when it does not occur. The Toyota Service Personnel told me it is the brakes readjusting. I don't know. It's not a major issue,..yet.

I just felt if several TACO owners like myself are having the same issue I/We may get a idea on why OR find a fix. I kind of thought that was one of the reasons for this forum. I apologize if I offended anyone for asking the question.

 

I've gotten it with the defroster on, which uses something in the A/C circuit..i think the compressor...anyway, i only really noticed it the first month and it kinda scared me a few times when i was close to the car in front of me. But you get used to it, i like to stop about a car length behind the car in front just incase some ass clown rams me, or if i let up on the brakes while searching for my phone jammed down between the console and seat

 

What position is your vent selector in, floor, windshield, dash or a mix?

I don't recall which position or positions that my vent selector was in. I do know however that this has happened when AC is off or on and fan is off or on. Vent selection has been varied but I cannot relate at this time if that is a possible cause.

Again, this is not a BIG concern. But if you were close to someone and were not alert you could possibly tap the vehicle in front of you.

Also, not related in anyway to my Pedal recall.

Also, also,...Toyota is a fine vehicle manufacturer (probably the best or one of them) and I am sure if they know about a flaw they would tell you.

 

The reason I ask is with the selector in the windshield or the windshield/floor mix the compressor or pump will still cycle on and off. Even though the a/c is turned off it will still go on and off causing these surges. It is just something to be aware of as you are now. As far as the brakes re-adjusting themselves...well i would call B.S. on that.

 

mine does this all the time. What really sucks is i have stopped before, then looked out the side window for a few seconds and when i looked back straight i realized i was moving and had to put on the brakes. Just is really annoying

I never realized this behavior in my truck until you wrote what you wrote above. I always thought I was daydreaming and not paying attention when my truck moved forward at a stoplight.

As a general statement I don't think I would describe the behavior as a surge, it's more or less a gradual increase in horsepower. It seems very subtle to me.

 

The guy posted a question and even appologised for the timing of it, right there he has my attention for being polite about it, we owe him the same courtesy back. If he become a douche then be rude back but he was not, so it really made your post come off rude. I will agree with you that there has been a lot of threads like this lateley. However this guy is not wanting his money back or anything so give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

 

Well when you joined people didn't have the media blowing every little concern up your ass. He asked a question, got a few answers, stayed and replied (which many don't do), and learned something out of it.

Many new members recently.. The ones that join just to b*tch and complain get flamed and for the most part are forced not to reply in their own thread.

This man however went about it in the proper manner.

 

My 2010 does the same. I had a 1989 Camry V-6 and it too did the same, made no difference if the air/heat or anything was on. I just got used to firmly keeping a foot on the brake. I traded a 95 F-150 for my Prerunner and it did the same thing.
I think eveyone's awareness has maybe been heightened a bit by all the attention to Toyota issues.

 

Sometimes it is very subtle and sometimes it is stronger on my TACO. But obviously, I am not the only one having this issue. But depending on how intense it is could possibly bring some future grief.

Now I do not want to call in the Toyota President for a briefing over this. OK? And I don't consider this whinning or a lack of manhood. But I would be interested in understanding why this is occurring.

And,..maybe,...maybe, we can figure this out. Which is what a Forum is all about. FInding common issues and solving them. I have already found resolutions to several issues on my TACO on this forum that have been very helpful and saved me considerable money in repairs.
