I need to get my truck in for the spare tire carrier recall. Who has had it done? What does the replacement look like?

I have pulled my spare out from under the truck and thrown it into the bed for the time being.

When you bring it in, how long does it take to replace it? Im i going to have to take a full day of PTO and sit in the lobby listening to someones screaming kid for 8 hours or is it an 10 minute in and out thing?

When they're don't it's going to look the same. There's no real difference that I can see

interesting. Does it still have the bit of plastic and everything?

I called the local dealer here closest to me. They are saying it takes 1.5 to 2 hours? Seems a bit nuts for a couple of bolts. Id have to take a 1/2 day of PTO just to get it there and stand around for it it seems.

I had a look and they replace the whole assembly. No idea how they would even get it out without removing the box. the studs come down from the top and there are no nuts. Hmm.....weird.

I had mine done too. Takes about 15 minutes. Plus Waiting at the dealership....It depends on if your the first vehicle in line that day.
They only change the cable and winch assembly.

Yup...the whole winch assembly. I had a look at mine and the bolts feed from the top down. They thread right through the assembly meaning there are no nuts on bottom. No clue how they get them loose. You would have to remove the box? That seems unlikely. Chances are i just cant see too good because of all the rust. :) Either way...not my problem if they are doing it.

What is the recall for? The hoist cable not strong enough or something? I've been thinking of putting a few bolts that the spare can use as lugs so it's not just that small cable since I'll be trying to stuff a 33 under there.

What years is the recall for?

Its for the hoist assembly although i think the metal end is the problem. It has a plastic piece in it that gets brittle, breaks and kills 1000s apparently. They do replace the whole hoist and not just the spring/metal plate. Years? No idea. I know 2004 is covered under warranty.

not sure what years but I think at least '00-'04, possibly 05+ ? look for TSB

they probably just lift the bed up. but that's why it takes 1.5-2 hours for full completion :)

I've heard of people replacing that by just loosening the bolts and jacking up the bed. That's how someone can do it in a more efficient way. Free is free though. Just make sure they tighten everything well. A dealer installed a shackle bolt backwards and forgot to put a nut on a spring bushing bolt when I got the leaf recall.

I received a notice from Toyota about it for my '03. Scheduled an appointment at our local Toyota Dealership but after they checked it, they said it was fine. Tech told me they were replacing ones that were compromised by rust.
