Got our bearing walls double plated and braced straight , ready to start building the rake walls on Monday

 

What pitch will the roof be? About a 4?

Yeah, I figured it wasn't that steep. We would have to put a rubber or metal roof on that here. Hope you don't get heavy snowfall in that area.

 

It is metal over a peel and stick membrane , and the roof framing is engineered for a pretty heavy snow load

 

I am sure you would agree....a little more pitch would be nice though.

Yup....that's why Frank Lloyd Writes houses have so many problems....leaky windows, need roof replaced every ten years...lol. Well...Itailian cars are pretty too..when they are not in the garage.

I know...we have come a long way since the 50-60's modern materials are great...but that whole roof is carried by LAM beams....right?

The rafters are 3 1/8" x 13 1/2" glulams on 4' centres bearing on our framed bearing walls , a 5 1/8" x 19 1/2" glulam outrigger beam at mid span and a 5 1/8" x 10 1/2" glulam beam at the low end sitting on 3" structural steel columns field welded to custom plates in the beam and cast into the concrete pillars

Yup...that's a hell of a roof. I would normally think it was over built....but knowing the pitch...makes sense.

 

How so?

 

FLW houses were mostly overspan , had crappy ( by today's standards ) glazing and no modern waterproofing or roofing materials

 

Well...how can I put this? ....Architects prefer form, over function...in my experience. The materials indeed did change, which pushes the architects to go further with their crazy designs. It's a symbiotic relationship, between people who build and people who design. In my opinion...nothing has changed.

 

Whats changed is there won't be any issues with the house I'm building because unlike a FLW house , this has been structurally engineered for not only span , but a high snow and wind loads plus the whole house is seismically restrained , add to that modern thermally broken double pane windows and skylights that comply to NAFS specs , rainscreen wall system , modern waterproofing and flashing products plus roofing and roofing underlayments

 

I am sure they thought back in the 50's everything was the top notch materials too. I am not saying the house you are building will have problems, I just get a kick out of a 2 pitch...no carpenter in their right mind would put that on their house. It's a glorified shed roof.

 

I wouldn't be concerned about the pitch if it was my place , it all comes down to how you detail the roofing , I've seen lots of higher putched roofs that leak , same thing
