Another local kid my age OD'd on heroin 2 days ago. At least this time he wasn't a friend of mine, but was one to a bunch of my mutual friends.

This is 3 in the last year, and 5 in the last few that have succumbed to this shit.

Hate this shit. I'm tired of burying people..which in fairness given where I go is more common to hear but it gets tired fast.

Same here. I've had 4 friends OD (one by suicide) and another commit suicide since I was 20. I'm too young to have so many friends dropping like flies. I'm currently worried about one of my best buddies from hs. He ran down to texas because he ran into some trouble up here and the rumour is he ain't doing too good. I'll be down there next week for family and I'm trying to get him to hang out and see how he's doing. He has no healthy connections down there. But yet again up here is where all his issues began.

Tough situation, the geographical fix is not a complete fix. I still see the places I boozed at a lot. Same old drunks still.

Good luck, hope you can reach him

I talked to a few addicts and they said life is just too difficult. Heroin frees them.

But they all said they knew and understood it would kill them, but they didn't care.

    Makes no sense to me.

This can give you a little insight.

He's saying he wants to hang out when I get down there so it's a start. Just hope it doesn't fall through.

It will help some for him though. Everyone he has connections with up here is an enabler. Most of my highschool friends still mess around with coke, pills, and weed and are at the bars several nights a week.

He needs to run off to alaska or some shit, lol.

Stopped by the supermarket to grab like three things. Get in the "express line" and an elderly lady in front of me has I don't know maybe ten items.

Actually all pretty good stuff, eggs, milk, carrots, yogurt, bread, etc...

Anyway, she goes to pay and neither of her two cards worked. I hear her say she was at the bank earlier and deposited $200 into the account. So the cashier lady tries again, but no luck. So she calls over the manager and he takes her to the service desk.

Of course by then the express line was backing up and when I looked behind me nobody was happy with the holdup.

Hey, that's life, sometimes things don't go as it should.

So as I'm leaving I see the lady and the manager at another register and he's running her card.

I get to my car and throw my bag in the back seat, and I just had to see if the ladies card went thru, so I head back into the store.

Just as I get close to the register I see her turning towards me with almost tears in her eyes. Apparently her card didn't get approved.

I felt my heart drop. I told her I'll use my card and she didn't really want to accept, I can only imagine how she felt. But I told her sometimes the bank transaction doesn't get out until later in the day.

As I walked her to her car she said it was her 80th birthday today!

We had a real nice chat. She said she still drives, and drives really well she said, and she shovels her own snow. This gal was sharp and in great health. Which was evident from her grocery purchase.

I just hope she is able to find out what happened with her deposit.

It was definitely my lucky day! I got to meet this adorable lady and her personality and attitude was refreshing.

This is the squad about 5 mins from my hometown, just one squad, I wish the rest of my county EMS stations did this. They update that after every heroin call.

I made it a point to speak about this during my first speech in my college class after hearing some of the "kids" (I'm one of the oldest in the damn class) talk about shooting up. Little bit of an eye opener when you call the entire class "a slab of meat", and "for those who have given into the demon, and now lay lifeless, needle still hanging out of their arm for the second, third or fourth time in one shift."

Kid actually came up to me to talk about it. Aside from pediatric trauma... Heroin od calls are my most hated dispatch.

Parked in the Walmart parking lot, look over at the car next to me, and four of them shooting up right there in the Walmart parking lot.

One guy saw me looking so they moved the car just a few rows away. Like its no big deal whatsoever.

Not necessarily responding to your post directly....

They keep saying we have a heroin / drug epidemic. Which is true....but they (Media? whoever) act like its something totally new. Drugs & Drug Epidemics/overdoses have been around for as long as drugs have existed. It's only NOW with Facebook & social Media that we have much more visibility of it. It looks much worse now because of that visibility. There have been Drug Task forces, Drug programs, Drug interventions for years in the past that have come & gone yet the drug problems still exist. And now, we have Narcan....which is a good thing.
However - You can't keep reviving people who are NOT willing to fix themselves.

......PARENTS need to get more involved. FAMILY / FRIENDS and LOVED ONES all need to get involved. But, a drug addict needs PUSH (and/or FORCE) from Parents/Family/Friends/Loved ones to make them WANT to fix themselves. Otherwise, they'll go right back to using.

Society is so wrapped up in 'themselves' these days. Too concerned about 'selfies' and 'look at me - I'm awesome'. I don't think we're spending enough time looking around and taking notice to other people in our lives......

    Sorry, vent off! LOL

I do agree with you on the visibility of it, however there is something sort of new about this crap. The way they are making it, is some pretty fucked up shit. It isn't as "clean" if you will, as it was in the past. Additionally, while Vitamin N is a fantastic agent to battle the over doses, it is usually what winds up killing them.

    Person shoots up
    Is found "unresponsive"
    Medics arrive, push narcan,
all is well again, person is no longer dead.

Person goes to hospital, leaves AMA (against medical advise), goes home, shoots up again, not realizing the Narcan is still in their system, so because of that, they don't get high... they shoot up more.... still no response, and thus, they over dose to the point that they die not realizing that the Opioid inhibitor is still in their system.

Now fast forward, you can get Narcan over the counter as a nasal spray, what people don't realize is how Heroin works, in laymans terms, it pretty much drops your breathing rate, to the point that you stop breathing. Nasal Narcan only works if a person is get this... BREATHING.

I've had everyone from Cops to friends or family tell me they gave them narcan already but it isn't working. Well... yea... they aren't breathing.

Our narcan we carry gets injected into the blood stream. Thus count to 5 and they start coming back around.

Any way you look at it, it's a touchy subject.

I agree with you, but heroin has never been so cheap and powerful as it is today. It's cut with another drug that's ten times more powerful, hence all the overdoses.

It's also much more readily available, and for some reason young people are willing to try it even tho theyve read/heard about all the damage it causes.

More than 100 heroin deaths a day in the US.

Seems like a lot of the young kids today don't want to try and make, life is hard, but some don't want to try. It's like they don't have the desire or don't want the struggle and work it takes to get ahead.

The percentage of addicts has drastically increased. I remember plenty of kids doing drugs in high school/college but I don't recall anyone who O'd. Several died drunk driving.

Today it seems every school kid knows someone on heroin. Seems like every town, big or small, has several O'ds every week.

HBO did a special in my area, think it was called "Heroin Cape Cod" or something like that, and it was really really sad to watch.

I agree with you completely. However - If you teach your children the dangers of it and 'get involved' with their activities....they'll make better choices and not go anywhere near it (regardless of how powerful it is and easily accessible).

I done pot in high school a couple times. I could've tried coke at a party....but - decided not to. My Dad would've kicked my ass so hard if he even got a sniff of anything.

I think that's half our problem...the generations of kids have it TOO EASY. Parents are letting them do whatever they want these days. They don't want to work and want things handed to them.
