Thanks. Yeah its gonna be my weekend toy eventually. Mpg's is not really gonna a concern for me. So I understand this right? 4.88's will give me more low speed tourque/power wheen crawling or acceleration from a stop and at higher speeds on the highway my rpm's will be higher then they would be then running lower gearing like 4.56? Right now I am on 4.10's and on the highway at 75mph my rpm's are right around 2900-3000. I am.on 285/75's though currently. What would my rpm's be if you had to guess with my future set-up wants with 4.88's at that speed or 4.56's for as well? I do plan on taking some long trips someday so trying to make sure I go the right route for a trade off so I can crawl and get on the highway and not be doing 50 the whole time lol. Thanks for the help btw!

Yeah you'll feel more torque I guess you could say. And acceleration will feel way better. Same if not better than stock. RPMS will jump quite a bit. Maybe somewhere between 3500-4000. That's a pretty broad range but I cant remember exactly. Somewhere in there.

I may go 4.88s then, I'd like to have a little bit more power when crawling. I hate being low rpms when I'm crawling, constantly in the clutch.

FWIW I have 5.29s & 315s and still average 16 mpg. Normal cruising speed on the interstate is 65-70. If I need to push it to 80 I can without any issues. Just sitting at ~3500rpm or slightly higher. Again, not an issue in my opinion.

It's slow off the line and I can drive through town in 5th gear, but for the purpose of my rig I'm happy to take low end over top speed.

    I love my 5.29s with my 315s.

Much much better for crawling, as before I was always either riding the clutch to go slower or bashing the hell outta my truck. And I think I prefer it on the highway with the higher RPMs. Mileage isn't a concern for me beyond being an indicator of engine health if it changes drastically.

I have an ultra gauge. Otherwise, I believe you can swap speedo gears in the dash to accommodate for the change is speed.

I believe you can change the speedo gear in the transfer case. Brett @Star-Lord changed his out, I believe. Depending on your tire/gear combo, there may or may not be a gear that gets you corrected perfectly.

Use the gear calculator on grimmjeeper to figure out any combo. Sounds to me though w 4.10 and 33s you should be around 2500 at 75 mph. I'm on 4.88 w 33s and at 3200 at 75 mph. That's with the w59 tranny but main big difference from your tranny is 3rd gear

I suspect there would be a difference in comparison though because your a 4banger vs a v6?

I'm not sure of the exact differences but they will only be due to the different transmission. But based on the calculations I've done I the past, the rpm and mph you're describing now calculate out to a 4.56 gear ratio

No problem! I have the gear in my pile of parts, but it's actually for a Tundra and uses a different shaft. When Brett did his he pressed the new gear and the old gear off of their respective shafts and pressed the Tundra gear on the Tacoma shaft.

It's a pretty cool fix. I just need to see if I can get Jake to pop the gears with his press. I need to get mine done before I rack up too many more miles on the odometer that aren't real.
