Why is it?

Why is it that when creeping along in first, say i'm in line to enter a parking garage. So, i'm creeping along and sometime when I go to clutch in to come to a stop, it seems like there is a lot of friction and a thud and then I'm in neutral. Almost like it didn't want to shit into neutral? Is this because the transmission is loaded? sorry for the newb question...I came from a 1994 manual carola that drove totally different

 

So, you're creeping, then clutch in, and your truck stops? Is that correct?

your probably lugging the motor and when you clutch it, it suddenly jumps backup to idle. That can cause a thud when the tranny is suddenly unloaded.

 

Yes that sounds like it! So i'm riding along in first (slowly) and let off the gas...my truck starts to slow down....and slow down...and then i clutch in and it just feels like everything unwinds...

No it does not shift into N by itself.

No the truck does not stop...it just makes a bad noise like the fly wheel is beeing yanked off

On a side note, I think I know what you're talking about. If I push the clutch in quickly while moving along in first you get a very mechanical sounding disengagement of the clutch. I've found that if you push it in slower/smoother it won't make that noise/give that feeling.

Why does it do that? Probably something to do with load and gearing in 1st, but any answer I would give would just be a guess.

 

no, it has nothing to do with the shifting. It will shift into N fine...it just makes a bad noise when cluthcing in...then i can shift fine.

It's the same noise as if you were driving along in 2nd...speeding up qwith the tranny loaded. But then clutched in BEFORE the rpms were in the sweet spot.

yes...i've tried that...I have to just VERY slowly clutch in. And sometime this is not as option as i need to clutch in fast to stop.

Unfortunately, that's normal from what I've read and been told. Mine usually does it before normal operating temps though. After that, it's fine.
