Taking a family vacation in the Taco this summer and I'm going to put the new A.R.E. shell and Yakima racks to use with a cargo hauler.

Anyone have pics of a Yakima Skybox on a shell or any other brands they prefer?

Right now I'm leaning towards the Skybox 16.

    All opinions/suggestions/comments are welcome. tia.

Hey ~ I've got the Yak SkyBox 16. It is awesome. Tons of room, more aerodynamic than they used to be, and finally a smart system for opening with one handle on either side of the box. The clamps have been modified too so you can easily take it on and off the bars. give it 5 out of 5 stars. Have fun on your trip!

thanks alot for the response!! I'm thinking the 16 because it is about 11" shorter than the others and I think it would look better on the shortbed and not stick out so much.

I saw your pics in the other thread and it looks like yours is mounted a little forward instead of centered front to rear. Any reason for that?

I'm thinking of going with the all black since it costs less, I think yours is the titanium. Think it's better for the money? Thanks again for the help.

I chose the 16 so I could fit skis and fishing rods etc. It is wide enough that you can center it and still get into it from either side.

I mounted mine forward because the bed is so short it looks more balanced, but more importantly it keeps the shell's back hatch from hitting it when its up. Mine comes pretty close as it is, but still misses it. I just measured up from the window to get the same height on both sides, and measured as well as I could back from the front to try and get it off the rounded corner of the topper.

I went with the titanium even though it was more coin because it is WAY cooler in the summer. The black just sucks up the heat. I guess it depends on what you end up storing in there, but I like keeping things as cool as possible. Otherwise, I think the performance between the two is similar.

excellent info, thanks. Clothes getting hot shouldn't matter much. Our bows and equipment will be in the bed.

Makes sense for the location. If you have any other pics and have time, post them up. Thanks again for the great info!!

I think that is all I've got for pics ~ you can't go wrong with the Yak 16. You mentioned bows ~ hunting trip?

Ben, took a couple of quick and dirty's yesterday.......It actually is just set up there, not fastened down. A buddy and his Family called and asked to borrow it so I just snapped a few to give you the idea.

Mine is a Yakima Platinum series 18......Eighteen cubic feet, dual opening. I've gotten a ton of use out of it, and so have lots of my buddies.:D

^That looks great Marc!! Thank you very much for the pics brother. It sure does hug the top well, it also looks to really be nose down well to deflect the wind. I'm a shortbed so the 16 is about 11" shorter and should look about the same on mine as yours does on your truck. Rep to you for the extra help bro!!! Thanks again!!
