    dont rule out departments yet

the one that fits one person may not fit you

you may not care for the other places but if you want to be LEO...apply everywhere and then take the best offer

if necessary...join another dept and get some experience if need be (even if its a dept you dont want to work for) and then go get hired later at the dept you want to work for

From what I understand where I'm at:
    -Written Test
    -Physical Test
    -Background Exam
    -Psychological Exam
    -Polygraph
    -Academy

And if you make it through all that:
    -Probationary Period

Excellent advice. With 3-5 years under your belt you can practically go anywhere but you will have to repeat their police academy because of the differences in Law....

That shouldn't be a big deal...When I get out of school, I'll either apply to all the PD jobs that, That the requirements I meet. Or pay for the police academy to get my Peace Officers cert. And Apply all I can find, And take the best one.

Good solid thinking but not legal thinking. Alot of agencies will want you to go back thru their training so they can't get tagged in civil court for negligent instruction...(You weren't trained good enough). Trust me you can expect to get sued several times and since you work for the city or state they will sue them to...You don't have any money...the agencies do. About the only way you won't have to recertify is if you go with a sheriff's office somewhere and pay is god awful with those guys for the most part. My hat's off to your dad and his work in Houston. They were crying for cops in the mid-70's and the Black Panthers were featuring "kill a cop a month" campaign with Houston as one of the target cities.

Lots of good advice in this post. Heed it.

That said, make sure you are working on college hours. The more the merrier. In fact, get a degree.

Get the hiring info from lots of agencies. Take lots of tests.

Be 100% truthful in the hiring process.

If you start in a Sheriff's Office, you will start in the jail. Learn from it and go to school while working.

Be very careful about your alcohol intake from now on. I've seen plenty of careers end or end before they even began thanks to alcohol.

    Good luck to you.

The only Sheriff's department i'll work for would be Harris...The rest in Texas don't pay well at all.

Houston Police pay very well and they are in real need for officer, So my dad says. But it's stil Houston. But I never know, I might end up their and be happy someday.:D

Also with the "police academy in college" you have a point their.

If you have any questions about HPD, feel free to ask/Pm. What station does your dad work at? Also I have a feeling that you wanting to try somewhere else has a LOT to do with you trying to get away from Stinka-dena!! HAHAHA J/K

Physical fitness, take a communications class, writing course (english grammar and usage). Depending on which state you choose to work in, take a firearms course and their justification laws (Conceal Carry Weapons class, if available).

I went the Military route and learned chain of command, structure and discipline. I also volunteered time with a friend's agency (in which I work now) taking bites from the K-9 guys and learned Patrol ops. I also read up on my states laws.

Overall we look for well rounded individuals with life experience, who have a clear head and can think fairly quickly. We want somebody who wants to learn and has the ablility to retain information taught at a quicker than normal pace. We also like driven individuals who show assertiveness, not cockiness. And as a rule of thumb, a good leader has a great Servant Heart.
