I recently purchased a 2016 SR5 Access Cab Tacoma without a tow package since I only tow a 14ft jon boat and small trailer. However I can see no way to connect a 4 pin trailer harness without splicing in an after market version (and the Marietta Toyota folks didn't have an answer either).

Background: To hook up trailer lights the manual (p 178) states under "Connecting Trailer Lights": "Use the wire harness stored in the rear end of the vehicle"......no such wire harness is there.
I have the plastic bumper cover and slot for a seven pin wire pollak but no apparent connector from my factory wire harness (#82169 04020) that would match the Toyota wire pollak (available from the dealer). I did find the below lead on the back left side of the wire harness that almost reaches the rear bumper wire harness slot. Any suggestions ??

I want to do the same thing....... I gotta see if I can find that plug on mine. Where was it at and wonder if it's for the factory 4 and 7 pin plug...

Most standard trailer plugs are either 4 PIN or 7 PIN... if it's neither, you need to pull back the wiring harness on your trailer, back to the wiring side at the end of the trailer, strip it out and connect a standard PIN and wire it in.
Or take it to U-Haul or a place that can do it for you.

    Moe,
I found that particular plug terminal (about 8 inches long) where the left tail light wires meet the main wire harness that crosses to the right side along the rear bumper. It was attached with electrical tape above the spare tire. There were four wires going into that socket (red, blue and two whites).
There is also another plug-in socket at the back left side of the wire harness that is 1/2" by 1" and has two rows of five female pin connects but only has two wires going into the plug so assume it to be a test connection point...picture below.

OK ---- look's like I can now answer my own post. Since I didn't want to splice any wires and doesn't appear those factory connect points are for trailer lights, I called Curt Manufacturing and asked their technicians about a specific T connect wire harness for a 2016 Tacoma (connects behind the tail lights). In short, they have it designed and the assembly parts are on order; it should be available for purchase in January ..... and to keep checking back periodically.

The parts department said to me if the truck that is not factory equipped with towing I would need to order the entire harness and change out to the one with a towing package and I said so I bought a Corolla with a truck body ?

Right NYT , I do know about that harness but the fact that they install a non towing harness on the truck is my #1 complaint.

I guess I'm confused then. So I fully understand your complaint, you are upset that you bought a truck without the tow package installed and you are complaining that it didn't come with a wiring harness for the tow package?

I guess that's it. I bet you could plug in to any other truck with standard stuff and not have to buy a "special" aftermarket design.
Of course the the aftermarket people are happy.

I like Toyota Truck 's and in the past at least on a Tundra you got a plug. Tacoma cost what $24,000 and it is not equipped with a harness that is user friendly ?

If I had researched it ahead of time , I would have made a different decision.
The sales people think gold comes out of the exhaust.
