Unlimited power train warranty

does anyone have good/bad experience with unlimited miles power train warranties?

I bought my first Tacoma at auto nation and they gave me an unlimited miles powertrain warranty for free. they said that all I have to do to keep the warranty for life is to do the scheduled maintenance at any reputable car mechanic and keep the record. How legit is this??

 

What constitutes reputable mechanics and records? If your, say, U-joints go out do you need proof that they were greased every so often??

I had a transmission rebuilt once and paid $600 for a lifetime warranty. All I had to do was get annual inspections. That particular franchise folded six months later and I was unable to make the 240 mile round trip to the next closest place.

I really miss that $600...

 

Your "free" warranty is being paid by using the severely overpriced dealer maintenance.

 

The dealer said any mechanic can do it as long as I keep the receipt. (Even said I can do it myself as long as I keep the receipt from where I bought the oil (I.e. Costco)).

As long as I keep up with the scheduled maintenance then I am covered. How crazy is this?? I brought the truck at auto nation of Winterpark. They said they've been doing his for almost a decade now.

 

I don't need to use them, I can go to any mechanic as long as I keep the receipt and do what needs to be done on the scheduled manual

 

'Said' doesn't hold much water in a claims case.

What's written in the document both parties sign is what counts.

I recommend you read it.

 

Don't get too excited. You can rest assured they are making money, or they would not offer it. Most people will take it to them for service, and you best have it in writing that you don't have to, not just what the salesman 'said'.

I'm guessing it's not transferable either. So remember, you're already under a Toyota warranty. This deal doesn't kick in until that is over. The majority of new vehicle buyers (different that forum members) don't keep vehicles long enough for this warranty to matter.

You are right. It is non transferable, only I can use it. So if I sell it the unlimited power train is void

I'd go by what your paperwork states; not some guy at the dealer.

 

Had to cover my personal info, but the yellow receipt clearly stated that I have it. I just hope that they will honor it when that day comes

 

Which tells you nothing. The definition of 'Limited' is buried in the small print.

No one is disputing you have it. What you need to figure out is what is it, what are the rules of limited.

Again, what the salesman said is suspect at best. You really need to read the fine print.

Looks like you bought your vehicle at Autonation Toyota of Winter Park.

It's a little off topic, but if you plan to get your maintenance there, choose Gerry (Geraldo) as your maintenance advisor. I always get taken care of properly when I take my Land Cruiser and FJ there for routine maintenance. Their parts department is spot on too as I was able to get a part for my Japanese imported Hilux in a span of 2 days.

 

Yes I did. Did they also offer you the lifetime power train warranty? It's my first Toyota and I'm pretty excited!

 

I bought the Land Cruiser and FJ at two separate dealerships years ago and don't recall being offered the lifetime power train warranty. Congratations on your purchase. Gerry should be able to take care of you at Autonation for your service needs.

It sounds legit honestly but you really never know until you try to file a claim. Normally the "no name" warranties are the horrible ones
i.e. "Auto Protection" or "Assurance automotive" shit like that. Good warranties usually have an insurance carrier backing them such Nationwide, etc. usually big chain warranties aren't horrible either.
What you have APPEARS to be an in-house warranty at the Toyota you bought the truck from. I don't believe you would run into any problem as long as you follow their guidelines. You need to get a written document stating EXACTLY what the stipulations are. Nobody stays in business giving free shit away all day unless they expect you to buy stuff there or buy another vehicle there.
