Hitting the gas while you have the transmission disengaged damages nothing during a shift. I 100% guarantee you rev matching/heel toe'ing (which is rev matching too) is the right way to do it. It puts way less stress on your clutch and drivetrain overall.

If you were to go to neutral and floor it to redline and then shift to the next gear and slip the clutch back down every shift yes that would be bad. But rev matching to roughly the correct rpm is guaranteed the proper and least amount of wear way to do it. You don't NEED to rev match with synchro's but it most definitely prolongs the life of your clutch and the synchros as well. There is less of a difference the system needs to make up for if the RPMs are in line.

There is no need to double clutch a synchro'd transmission. I only do it going into 1st (and also rev match 1st) because 1st gear is the only one that has gotten stuck for me, even at a dead stop.

I hate to repeat myself but as long as @Dannyblues does, so will I.

"Please ignore @Dannyblues I think he is living in a different century than the rest of us. he is incorrect in just about everything he has said about driving a modern stick shift. If we're talking a 60's era Mack truck it is probably good info, but is totally irrelevant to a 3rd Gen Taco."

I'm sure you are a nice guy and we are close to the same age, but you are simply wrong. Our transmissions are full syncro, there is no need to double clutch them, and it does not hurt anything to blip the throttle on a downshift (in fact it reduces clutch wear as the trans and engine rpms are matched).

Ok. I think that's what I learned many years ago when beginning to learn to drive manual trannys. I'm sure though that the reason you pull the vehicle into neutral while at a long stop light isn't just to give your leg a rest as opposed to waiting out the long light in first with the clutch depressed. So the same logic would apply to revving the engine with the clutch depressed, no???

Not taking any sides, but why over analyze the MT? If you need to have this much discussion on how to drive the manual you probably should have got the automatic.

You are correct about releasing the clutch in neutral at stops. However, a blip of the throttle (blip not revving it to high heaven) doesn't add anything to the time the throw out is under stress and there is little RPM difference between revving the engine a bit just before you release the clutch. you really aren't so much matching the revs as you are getting the engine RPMS moving in the right direction for a smooth downshift.

I just wanted to make sure I'm downshifting properly having never towed with a stick. Now I'm all like 200_s.gif

Like I said earlier when u asked, I just don't use overdrive gears when I'm towing. If it's flat for a long time I will but that's it.
Have u tried to back a trailer up any kind of incline yet? If not, that's some tricky shit with this transmission.

All this rev matching talk makes me think of the newer cars that have the auto rev match feature. Anyone have any experience in one of these? If so how did u like it?

I back into my garage every night. Long story. It's a pain in the butt but I take it slow.

My trailer is a 6x12 enclosed that's never loaded with more than 500lbs. It takes it in 6th just fine on my usual route, but I haven't towed it to Kansas City yet... that's where I'll need downshifting

This, the time doesn't change which means it won't hurt anything. Honestly with these transmissions, I only rev match or double clutch if shifting down one or more gears OR I am needing to take off quickly on an onramp. Otherwise it's a waste of effort.

All this shifting technique stuff began when a newbie to the world of manual transmissions asked about shifting. I personally discussed all the different methods used over the years from about the 1950's to present including a variety of vehicles including semi trucks.

    Is it really 2017 already!!!

I'm still not satisfied with the concept of revving the engine with the clutch depressed even in modern vehicles. I've always heard it was bad for the drivetrain ( I think it damages the throw out bearing ). I've received so much flack and opposition regarding this I'll have to research it further. I personally occasionally double clutch when going down a steep decline in third then double clutch to second with a good blip in neutral in between. I have a steep downhill just down the road from my house in a 30 mph zone that includes a sharp curve. It enables me to slow safely without using the brakes.

If and when I get the issue of revving with the clutch depressed cleared up I'll report back. At this point I feel an apology may be in order and I'm wrong due to so much negative response. Either that or many of you don't know squat. Ill get back one way or the other.

In the meantime I appreciate all your responses even the contradictions. Dannyblues
