So I'm thinking about updating my audio in my 2009 Prerunner. I'm considering this from Crutchfield with the basic installation package. I don't know squat about audio stuff, I'm looking for a unit that will allow hands free calling from my android phone as well as a traditional radio. Is this is a good deal and what's up with extended warranty, worth it or no?

I'm sure this question has been done before so Ill apologize in advance.

I just had a Pioneer AVH 4100 NEX head unit installed in my 02 DC Pre Runner and absolutely love it

Thanks Chuck...I'm working on a pretty slim budget of $200-250 and my OEM setup is drifty. I read somewhere that this is a nice setup for the price. I like that setup that you have, looks sweet.

You should look on eBay. There's a seller named musicfirsthq that sellers manufacturer refurbished pioneer DVD HU's. I bought one last year and it functions just like a new one. To can usually get them for less than $200.

I've actually got more than that in my whole system , I believe I've got $2000 plus total between the 4100 head unit , (4) Pioneer G6854R 250watt speakers , (2) Pioneer 8" shallow mount subs in a custom enclosure and subwoofer volume control

    I think I've become an audiophile !!

I ordered one from Crutchfield with the install kit. Total cost 189 bucks, the local BB wanted 238 just for the radio. I'm psyched, my OEM radio sucks

    Jeff ...

What model # , also FYI I just found problem with my 4100 NEX . Even with the latest firmware update my stereo takes over 2-3 min to turn on after starting my truck . It will turn on if I restart my truck or hit the reset button

I guess this is a known problem that I wasn't aware of

hey man, you said you have an 09 eh, so you don't have any buttons on the right hand side of your steering wheel? I did not, but you can add them so that you can answer and hang up phone calls directly from your steering wheel. it is not hard to do. I will try to find the thread I got part numbers from haha I have a Pioneer AVH-x2800bs and I am satisfied! got everything from crutchfield.

    EDIT:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/bluetooth-steering-wheel-controls.51212/
    read thru this thread.

Right hand control: 84244-35030-B0 (LED lights wont match left hand side)
Ribbon to connect right hand control to left hand control: 84204-58010

my OCD would not be able t handle the two controls not matching so I ordered a kit that contained both controls and the ribbon: 8425004010B0

you will also need the PAC-SWI-RC steering wheel control interface.

now I am not sure which wiring harness you require because I had already installed a Crux SWRTY-61S wiring harness/steering wheel interface controller. Then I found out about adding the right hand steering wheel control so I did this:

That would be awesome, no steering wheel buttons right now but it would be cool to have them. Not sure if Ill try and install this or not, BB will install the whole deal for about a hundred bucks. I have a buddy who may do it for a case of beer or gas money but I'm not too sure about the "quality" of the installo_O

Man that sucks....I read a bunch of reviews on the Pioneer I just bought and didn't see any problems with it warming up. Can you return it?

honestly its not that hard but for the right price it cant hurt to pay someone, its mostly just matching color wires together haha I updated my OP with a little more info on adding RH steering wheel controls. I'm pretty sure the HU comes with a mic you can hang somewhere in the cab, I know mine did. I ran the mic wire up the driver side pillar and hung it up next to the sun visor, barely even notice it and no exposed wires.

I don't have any start up issues with mine, loads right away, no delay at all even in the winter. the only thing I did notice lately was the mute function. I added the right hand steering wheel controls, well the bottom button on the control is "voice command" but y HU is not compatible so I programmed it to mute the HU. Makes sense right? well it doesn't mute it completely, something called Attenuation or something rather, it just lowers the volume by 20db. there are setting on the HU to change the mute preference from Attenuation, to MUTE or OFF, well even with the software update, regardless of what I change the settings too, no complete MUTE for this guy. I contacted pioneer about the issue and after a few back and forth emails, they just stopped replying haha guess I will just live with it and hope the next software updated fixes it. if I mute it on the HU itself it mutes completely but it kinda defeats the purpose of having a button on the steering wheel haha

Getting a new 4100 NEX this week , the problem is there a bug / glitch that causes the unit to go into reboot when you turn the key from acc to start .Once that happens it can take up to 2 min to reboot but this issue is sporadic and the firmware update supposedly helped

Yes, that is a good price. I have installed many of those and it is a decent unit. Sounds like it will suit your needs. It does lack many features that the step up models have but might not mean anything to you. The one drawback to it is the display. Many of them are very pixelated. Make sure you look at it and if your happy great, if not return it. If you end up exchanging it and don't want to pay for CarPlay or android auto, then see if you can find a avh-2800bs. Older step up from the 280/290 but it comes with a cd/DVD player that yours doesn't come with. You might not want that either though. Just a thought

Basic head units are easy to install. Like another guy said, it's pretty much matching wires. You'll have the harness from the radio and a harness that plugs into your factory harness plugs. The wires are all color coded. Just wire them together and use crimps, solder or even electrical tape to seal the ends. Then you'll screw your mounting hardware to the sides of the radio. Put it all back together and enjoy. I wouldn't pay someone to do it. It is really that easy. I'm 36 and have been doing this since I was 16. I learned on my own to install radios, subs, amp car alarms you name it I've done it. This is super easy, you got this!
