Ok so I went out and checked because I've wondered about this before. The gear selector only displays D3, 2, and L which tells me 3 speed with no OD but I've counted it shift 4 times and find no way to disengage the OD. My old dodge had a button you could push for Tow/haul mode but I see nothing here.

I went back out and checked. When it's in the D3 position it can be slid to the left against the detent as you said nd that I guess will do it

Yep that is the non overdrive position you will note your RPMs go higher with it etc it is meant to tow with or I think serious hill climbing as I have had my Cruise control kick out when hitting steep hills at home in Maine ie 15 % grade and I think the other is 20 % or higher but not marked it is a woods road they paved lol

I'm leaving Wednesday night and doubt I have time to get a trans cooler. I'm thinking if I get the small trailer I'll probably only be pulling around 800 pounds at the most including the trailer. The truck ought to handle that ok It may not even know it's there

You can shift it over anytime btw you do not have to be stopped but I would suggest that you do it when at a steady speed I even let off the gas when I do it just to let the stress off not sure if it matters though just my thought on shifting an automatic non race transmission under load.

I would get the smallest double axle you can lol if you have towed before small single axles are a BITCH to back up small change in the wheel and the damn things will come around on you :} Unless you have installed crab steering borrowed from an Aircraft tug lol

I don't think you have much to worry about. 4 bangers have been pulling trailers a very long time. Just take you're time. You may find you wished you had something in the bed of the truck (if it's empty) to make it ride better.
