Sounds like you're good to go! Prince nymphs, San juans in pink, midges sizes 18-22 (olive, black or purple), elk hair caddis, cracklebacks work the best.

Any tailwater fisheries or coastal salmon runs?

Do people ice fish for big lake brookies?

Some tailwaters, but the good ones in the northern part of the state are closed during the winter. Some in the southern part, but the edges freeze and access can be a challenge.

Yes, people do ice fish for big brookies and do quite well. But most of the native Brook trout ponds are close to ice fishing.

Any coastal salmon runs would be Atlantic Salmon and they're off limits. Most of the landlocked salmon retreat to lakes in winter, but some do stay in some of the bigger rivers in winter.

Does any one have a fly rod for backpacking? Im looking into something like a 7 piece 4 weight. I spend most of my time with a 4 weight and would like to use the same reel if possible

The one I use is a St. Croix 8' 4 wt, 4 piece. Not as packable as what you mentioned, but I have an aluminum tube for it, and just strap it on my pack.

Anyone interested in this "vintage" Plano tackle box with 21 flys?

Make me an offer. Free shipping.

I started to get into fly fishing about 20 years ago and didn't stick with it. I think I acquired this box and flys from an ex-girlfriend who had been given some of her grandfather's gear. It's also possible a bought some flys to put in the box. I really don't recall.

Feel free to ask questions. I'll answer them the best I can. Keep in mind, I have very limited fly fishing knowledge.

Orvis makes a 7 piece Clearwater but only in 5, 6, and 8wt. I have a 4pc 5wt Clearwater that seems like a fairly good rod for the money although I have only owned three rods and am just a couple years into fly fishing.

Cabela's has some very nice pack rods in various weights. I actually prefer them to my Orvis pack rods. Comes with a 2' rod tube. I've been switching to pack rods over the years. So much easier to store and transport.

The only problem is keeping the rods straight. Ive been trying to label all the rod tubes, but still somehow get the rods mixed up.

Has anyone used the OPST Commando heads on a single hand ~9ft rod? There aren't many places around here where I can fish with a 12ft+ spey rod and that style of fishing has started to interest me.

My 7' CGR is a 3 piece rod, same with my 5'9" CGR. So thats 28" and 23" respectively. Most 9' rods break down into roughly 27" as well. If you like cheap 'glass rods, check em out. I think most rods you find under 7'6" are gonna be 3 pieces so theyre all gonna be right around 28-30" give or take unless you buy a "packable" rod.

    ^^ Alex,
What type of protection is inside of the Denver Outfitters rod tubes to keep the rod/line guides from getting damaged?
    Thanks.

Nada - I was expecting something in there... I may try some foam sheeting at the middle joint and down near the box.
