I have 97 Toyota four runner. Picked this rig up off craiglist. In add said not running. Go to look at it buy it on spot. Put new battery in knocks bangs little fires up.. blowing white smoke. Got it home. Started it ran it shut it off about 10 time.. then started smoking less so took it on first wheeling trip was great no smoke fine.. registered it ran it till winter. This is when it over heated for the first time ever. I had added bars stop leak 2 months before overheating. Today started to mess with it after it had been sitting threw winter. Put head gasket sealer in due to it blowing white smoke again. After running at idle for 20 mins decided to hit the trail up. the heat was in and out hot cool giving it gas it would get warmer. Made it to end of trail and the temp gage climbed into the red. Shut it off coasted far as I could..after letting it cool filled it back up.. went home let it run idle. Was fine when cap off. Felt cool spots in radiator so guessing it clogged.. "headgasket sealer will do that" I have new radiator gonna put in tomorrow. take air compressor try to blow lot heater core. has any one done this? I haven't looked yet but don't recall clear easy way to get to line to clean out. that's where I'm at the moment. Sorry for novel but figured this might help someone else. Will be flushing system and swapping radiator

Did the water pumped timing belt before doing anything else!! Also did "whoremonic" balancer.
Just want to make it clear that it shouldn't be that. Before installing the water pump.. I marinetech the hole. Don't think that would change anything. Right?

Also battery light been on. Gonna get new terminal if that didn't work not sure. If so ill let you know Alternator still good.

Also change thermostat and hoses. Run a flush thru it and after that put red coolant
    In it.

Anytime one part of your cooling system fails. Best to replace it all and don't forget to check the condition of the hose clams

Got home from parts store. Did oil change. swapped the radiator flushed system with water.. put thermostat in. Filled radiator started it up. Drove it still getting hot. Tried to let air come out of top of radiator.. top hose gets warm. bottom has pressure but not warm.. thinking either air in system. Or I'm wondering if the oil cooler clogged off the side of water pump.. did notice not liking staying at idle.. do have plugs wires coils for it..like to get it to stop overheating first. Got new battery terminal on still have batter light on.. don't make sense to me.

Took about hour hooked up speakers and cd player. Letting four runner run with cap off.. doesn't over heat with cap off.. brand new thermostat bottom hose still never heats up. Once caps on it builds pressure mostly in the top hose.. then over heats 10 mins into driving it..

So after today it is pretty clear. There is air in the system. Guessing there so much it can't open thermostat to let it out.. there is small hose on back of motor gonna try to bleed the air out of. If this doesn't work. Gonna fire up torch and heat up the hose covering thermostat!

Thought I had solved the problem when I found plugged line. Also took syringe and pumped the radiator fluid up there both heater lines. Hoping to pull the air out. Or moving it to a place where it might open thermostat think that where air is stuck.. has any one drilled small hole in the thermostat or pulled jingle pin out so it can bleed itself?

Woke up to snow today. due to trying to drive the air out rather then bleed it. Had a lot more water then read fluid.. there was frost in radiator. Put torch on the bolt to bleed it also thawing out and thing froze up I hoped. I didn't have any thing long enough to get at old bolt. So I build a homemade extension! After heating bolt up it freed up. I Let it drip out to till it was steady flow.. drain radiator used new coolant to get ratio so it won't freeze. Started it let it run squeezing hose. Hoping to push air out.. have parked on hill running heater on high.. see what happens soon.. thermostat still hasn't open.. if this doesn't work gonna try new thermostat..

Even with a bad head gasket water/ should flow there hole system and open thermostat right?
