I have a 2017 Off Road double cab short box. I'll be towing a 20.5 bow rider with a 2 axle trailer about 75 miles twice a year.. And also just short distances to launch the boat. It's about 4800lbs all together. I'm wondering if you all have had any problems with towing similar weight? I have a full Dakar leaf on the way so this should help with squat. Let me know what you all have towed.

Is that under the rating of the vehicle?

Assuming you bought the tow package?

What are your towing distances and conditions/terrain?

All those things matter. A lot.

Should be fine. Factory package is rated at 6,400lbs I believe. I haven't towed with mine yet but when I do, I will probably have either ECT Power engaged or just use sport shift.

I updated the distance. I DO have the tow package. I believe the rating is 6400 but could be wrong. I know it's under the capacity but it's still a small truck with not a whole lot of torque so just wondering what experiences everyone has had. Btw, mostly highway / flat terrain

That's right. Sport mode should definitely help.

I've towed 2500lbs a-liner (pop up trailer) would not want to tow much more than that frequently up/down grades. This truck is not built to regularly tow 4000lbs+.

I tow a 20' bow rider all summer. Longest distance has been 200 miles one way. No real issues, but you know its back there!

Good deal. Yeah like I said, it is just a couple times a year. Once to pick up, and once to drop off for the summer. The town I boat in is like 1 mile long so it's one block to dunk it. I'm hoping those dakars will help with stability. The one plus is that I have surge breaks on the trailer.

Towed an enclosed 6x10 aluminum trailer (approximate 1,100 lbs), chopper (716 lbs), tools, passengers and gear (approximately 600 lbs) a distance of 2,052 miles (1,026 each way). Averaged 9.1 mpg. Drove with ECT on and S4 the entire trip for 22 hours straight going and 18 hours straight on the return. The TACO did not enjoy inclines, but a press of the gas pedal and she would quickly down shift to third and off we went. Averaged 70-75 mph. (Comments regarding my driving habits can be kept to yourselves)
I have a slightly longer trip in a few months with similar towing requirements.

It will tow ok. Stopping is the issue from my experience... especially if it is a damp/wet road condition in a panic stop situation trailer brakes or not.

I regularly tow a 4,250 lb 22ft Hi-Lo with tandem axles and electronic brakes with brake controller in truck cab. Stay under 5,000 lbs and have brakes on trailer and controller installed in vehicle. Standard easy setup. Tows fine unless you make a habit of crossing "dead man's pass" regularly. There is a whole thread on towing with these here someplace including one to show you how to hook up brake controller. Unless you drive like a chimpanzee, it tows fine.

In my opinion the success of a tow is due to the driver. My old man pushed the hell out of his 03 taco when we raced motocross all over New England. He had a slide-on camper on the bed, steel frame 6x10 full enclosed trailer, 2 dirtbikes, 55 gallon water barrel, power washer, etc. It was a MT so he never had it in 5th gear. Struggled a bit up some steeper New Hampshire grades but he's been hauling all types of trailers since he started driving. Good times. Now that all of that is sold, he has a 4 cyl single cab taco that pulls a 15 ft Mauntauk without any issue. Just take your time and stay alert.

I have towed a car on a trailer, about 70 miles. Kept it at 60-65 on highway with ect and s4 or s5, managed about 17 mpg for that trip on flat highways. 4800 lbs
I was happy, but happier once I got the load off the truck. Truck actually felt peppy after that :D

    I did this-
5000 lbs., air bags and nothing more than the ECT button pushed. 70 MPH, no problems, just make sure you have trailer brakes0723161412_HDR.jpg

5000 lbs travel trailer, no suspension mods, weight distribution hitch, and a brake controller. No issues going 70 mph, ECT button pushed, 11 mpg for a 50 mile trip.

I'm always surprised at home much weight people tow with these trucks. Personally I've towed some ATVs on a small trailer and I thought it did pretty poorly.

I wonder if some of the discrepancy is the terrain people are towing over. I live in a relatively hilly part of TN and my OR struggled to maintain 65 with ECT on. I guess I should say struggled because it did stay at 65 most of the time but it also sounded like a rocket ship blasting off. A 5000 lb trailer would make for a LONG day of driving around here. Maybe the good towing experiences have been on flatter ground? Otherwise it is an enigma to me.
