mini subs

i had to sell my sub the other week cause i was a little strapped for cash i am bassless. i remember a while back when i bought my elemental design amps that they made a 6.5" subwoofer. i was thinking about putting one in each of my access cab doors for the time being until i get a new sub. what do you guys think?

Go for it. I had their 6.5" subs for a while when they were the EU700's a few years back. This one has been updated since then and I think they're a little better. I liked mine but I blew them up It was totally my fault though so no bad on their part.

 

If you plan on getting a new system, you probably should do it the right way, I dont want to sound hard-ass'd but personally you should get some 6x9s. Dont waste your money on 6.5 subs. 6x9's have plenty of bass and great SQ. Maybe put those in the rear and get some 6" door speakers in the from and some tweeters.

Then get some bass to match with your SQ.

Not to be a dick here, but man, you're way off base. There's a reason you won't find any sq competition vehicles using 6x9s... round speakers simply sound better. In fact, i implore you to find a high end 6x9 speaker at all. Companies like Dynaudio, Hybrid Audio Technologies, Rainbow, Morel, Seas, etc... they don't even offer 6x9s.

To the OP... I've heard decent things about the ED 6.5" subs. Check parts Express as well, I beleive they offer a couple 6.5" subwoofers, Tang Band is the one that specifically comes to mind. If you do put in your door, don't expect to get the same "thump" (for lack of a better word) out of them as opposed to subs in an enclosure. You'll also want to seal the doors as best you can, and deaden the hell out of them.

 

I'm sure you guys know by now that I'm running the Tang Band 6.5" sub that adhumston mentioned. Four of them in the bin below the rear seats and it bangs. Sounds fantastic too (I'm an SQ guy).

 

I told him to get 6x9 for bass/sq in his rears and 6 inch speakers for SQ in his front and then get some subwoofers. dont fool around with 6" Subwoofers...waste of money

 

Yeah, waste of time and money...the judges must not have known what they were doing when they gave me first place on more than one occasion in my IS300.




I wonder if they'll make the same mistake in the tacoma as well?

 

The ED 6.5" subs are amazing. I ran one in my Bullitt and one in my Tacoma. I'm running a Kicker solo-baric now, just because I wanted a change.

I actually considered the ED subs before I went with the Tang Band subs again. I figured if it was working before, why change it up?

Sound quality competition. Bass/SPL competitions don't have judges. That's what the meter is for.

 

Still surprised 4 speakers won a SQ comp. The only comps I have been to, the winners in the SQ bracket had tons of speakers. 6x9's, 6s, 4s, and tweeters.

My truck has two subs, two 6x9's in the back, and two 6s in the front. and two tweets. (All MtX)

 

which ones are you running? model #'s?

 

Don't they over heat with the heater running or did u block off the vent?

 

When you get to the real SQ competitions, it's more about the quality of your install and your ability to tune more so than your actual speakers. That's not to say you can roll up sporting Walmart Sony and expect to have a chance (at big comps anyway!), but the install and tune do play a huge factor.

With subs it's all about what you want them to do. No, a 6.5" sub is not going to have the impact and dig that a 12" has, but some people don't need/want that. All I ask of my sub is to fill in the lower frequencies that my midbass drivers can't reach... around 60hz and under. I much prefer a sub that blends well vs one that has huge "thump". I love it when people get in my vehcile and ask me if I have a sub. To me that means I'm doing it right, with the bass all feeling like it's up front in vehicle, not coming from behind.

 

Yeah make sense man. I understand a big part to good SQ is the install and the tuning. My door speakers have custom pods in in the door panels and have a damplifier pro layer to seal the sound in the truck. Now Im sure those 6.5's sound great. Im just saying I prefer to have a pair of 6x9's with a pair of 6's.

What vent? There isn't one going into the storage bin that I know of.

These things sound amazing... very clean, tight bass. Everyone said "you'll want to go bigger, don't waist your money", they were all dead wrong. I wanted an overall clean system that could give me amazing sound and these 6.5" subs help provide that.

Everyone has their "own" opinion on what sounds good and what they want out of their sound system. Obviously there are a few people here that can tell you that 6.5" subs work and work well.

Interesting! I didn't know Ultra made a 6.5 sub. Specs look decent but I'd like to see that sensitivity rating quite a bit higher. What's the xmax on them? Also, how large was the enclosure? Looks like it was a sealed box.
