Has to be something external causing this. There is nothing even close to that area that would make that kind of heat...even the radiator is over 12 inches away20170320_151751.jpg .

Super long shot, but maybe some hot wire is coming in contact with that hood latch assembly and heating it up? Or something rubbing the plastic from underneath?

Unfortunately I don't think Toyota is liable for any external damage. Do you have children in your house?

Looks like someone has a grudge on you.

Is the thickness uniform throughout your grille?

That is the same type of damage that happens in cities. Sunlight reflects off windows and can cause enough heat in small spots to melt plastic components on a vehicle. The black is probably where the paint was "cooked" enough to have the color of the plastic to show through.

If I remember right, there was a member a few years back that had a similar issue with damaged vehicle caused by sun glare off a building.

Yeah, and for it to happen to two of his vehicles tells me there's some sort of reflection heat at play here.

Was trying to think of where I had seen this before. The link that is included in this thread is the one I was thinking of and has it on an MGM! Looks like the one in the link quoted is for a White vehicle. Hmmm, no trend on color then. Weird.

Looks like a classic "curling iron" mark. Are you getting upset and taking it out on your vehicles? Anything you want to talk about?

The 4runner was MGM. Guys I'm a 50 year old Jarhead!!!! I'm not here to complain or look for sympathy. I am here looking for possible causes and advice. I do have a sense of humor most of the time. But not when it comes to this.

Looks like either a chemical burn or heat burn. By the loooks of the darker spots it appears to be more likely a heat burn. There are reports of the glass from buildings reflecting onto cars and causing either leather or something to burn. Usually happens in the summer but I guess if you live in a warm climate it's possible. Do you remember where you parked when you first noticed this? You mentioned garage but where were you before that?
