97 tacoma stereo upgrade help

Hi. I have a 1997 tacoma with an aftermarket pioneer 6 disk cd changer (underneath passenger seat) and tape player in unit stereo already installed. it is a single dim unit with a cove under it. i am looking to upgrade it so i can use my iphone with it, through aux, bt, or usb i do not care too much. i do not need a touch screen unit but they do look nicer and im willing to spend a little extra if needed. i also am looking to install this myself. i have swapped radios before, and can learn to do stuff well, but am very limited in anything extra (installing wires or trimming unit space) and do not have a lot of tools at my disposal. i would also be interested in looking at backup cameras, if they are easily installed. so if that pushes me towards a touchscreen i am okay with it. thanks for your suggestions and help!

I did this radio. It has no cd player but has Bluetooth, usb, aux, and am/fm. Small and lightweight. I love it so far. And easy to install. No dash kit needed and i jus got the wiring harness from walmart, match colored wires and rear lug it in. This is in a 96 btw

 

nice. it def would serve my basic needs and seems like an easy replacement. do you happen to remember the model of the radio? thanks for the response

 

I think it's a pioneer mvh-380-bt. Real simple install. I got it for around 100 or so on ebay new.

 

I recently installed a double din, touch screen, blue tooth and rear view camera ready. I got a really nice rear view camera on Amazon for $17, for a total of $175 installed. I had no prior electrical experience and was able to accomplish everything with almost no hiccups using just Youtube. Its really nice having that camera now!

Yea its pretty easy to install. no exposed wires, tap into the rear tailight so it only comes on when you throw it into reverse. I spent propbably an hour making sure I understood what the videos were conveying, then spent a few hours on a saturday installing it. My only hiccup was my ground wire was not properly crimped, but when I figured that out everything was operating perfectly. I no longer require my gf to jump out when parallel parking hah

were the tools you needed complicated? i dont know if i have a crimping tool handy

 

i started with no tools. The crimper tool that also strips wires was under $10 at autozone or whatever your local auto store is. You could probably order everything you need off Amazon for equally cheap. Wiring appears daunting at first, but then you realize its all color coded and relatively straightforward. I did feel like an idiot in the beginning, but after just this one experience I could probably wire any stereo now.

There are quite a few double din radios with cd,dvd, Bluetooth ect on Amazon for $250 and under. Pioneer, jvc, kenwood....they should all be a pretty simple install.

 

i was just hoping to find one that would fit right in without any (or very little) work necessary, such as trimming the housing. something that has worked for another person

 

No doubt....I've actually been looking at stereos recently for the phone Bluetooth connectivity. I'm over using the tape deck headphone device ha. From what I've seen most of these double din's should fit right in without much else as far as mounting. The single din will require the pocket underneath and a little more messing with fitting perfectly. You just need the wiring harness and match the color of the wires.

My truck came with an older Kenwood headunit, so the swap was really easy, as the existing wiring harness was the same. I placed the microphone just above the pass airbag switch.

 

If you want any REAL BASS You need to toss in a 12" or 10" sub with an enclosed sub box and amp hidden behind the seat. A sub with enclosed box will will a night and day difference.

 

This is true. My 12 inch makes all the difference in mine.

 

here's what I have in mine. Its a touch screen with DVD, got it off Amazon and also installed the 10" under the passenger seat. Sorry for shitty pics, it was when i was swapping out dash lights.

 

I have a 97 regular cab that I want to get a bluetooth deck with aux and fast usb charging ports in the front, and the satellite xm option.

hey my truck came with an old jvc cassette deck, do you think if I get a JVC media player replacement it will work with the current harness?

anybody know if I can swap my slider style HVAC controls for dials from an 01+ or a runner?
