Its a penalty normally but your argument of the fact they let a lot go during the game is a good argument. Should have called it all game for sure if they were going to but it's still 100% a penalty on a normal play. You also never know what's being said on the ice. Often refs give multiple warnings before hand. I would be pissed if te leafs lost like that but the bruins are still the playoffs so it's not a huge deal

BTW officiating impacting the game is a part of hockey. It's a set of humans put there and half of the rule book includes the phrase, "at the referees discretion." Interference was called because there was an opportunity gained from discreet contact made in front of the net. If it had of resulted in a goal it would of a been a horrid non call.

I've had to make similar calls. Yes it sucks and you get flak first it from fans but you get more when you don't call that shit late and a goal happens on the play.

If you called a game that way in my league I'd chirp your ass about it, without a doubt. Not that it would matter, but I consider good officiating to be consistent. If you set the tone or call a game a certain way, then call it that way. Especially on a very borderline penalty, no matter the circumstances. But given the implications of it, it is magnified.

At the end of the day, an officials job is hard, so I get that. And I try to keep the frame of mind that a winning team should overcome those types of things. In addition, I don't care about Boston whatsoever, so I'm totally just debating the call itself. Good talk though.

 

Consistency is definitely important. It should of been called earlier in the game as well. That's really the only way you can argue that call but in the end who knows what would of happened if that had of been called on Boston in the 2nd versus the 3rd.

Coaches want less penalties, fans want more particularly obstruction calls, and the league wants officials to "manage" each game. It's all contradictory. Refs don't manage or control a games flow as much as laymen think. Players control the game and coaches manage it. Refs are just there to keep things from getting well out of hand.

 

No matter how much time passes, somethings just can't be lived down. Like a (very rare) reverse sweep or countless game 7 choke jobs !
