My 44 years of driving manual transmissions tells me that while it may put some extra wear on the throw out bearing, the amount of that wear is insignificant and would possibly even be offset by the extra time you are putting pressure on it while double clutching. in all those years and miles of driving the only time I have had a throw out go bad was on my 63 Plymouth Belvidere (due to improperly adjusted clutch) and several, one right after the other, in my 70 VW bus (they were getting killed by a messed up pressure plate putting uneven pressure on them). So, either of those methods would be fine. Or you could not do either and just go to the lower gear and let the clutch out. none of those are going to kill your gear box/clutch.

I absolutely agree that you should be in neutral foot off the clutch while idling anywhere. (also be careful not to ride the clutch while driving).

As far as full syncro, I have to disagree that first is not syncroed. Every forward gear on a full syncro box has syncros. Many, like my 99 S10 have synced reverse. It looks like I am going to miss that when my OR comes in as I am sure I will grind it a few times going first to reverse without stopping. I think that the reason people feel that first is not syncro is because of the big difference in ratios between 1 & 2 so it takes a long time to spin first up to speed.

I want to thank you for your willingness to argue this in an adult manner (something that I may not have done at the beginning). I think it has been good for the young'uns to see that there are different ways to approach our beloved MT's and also that it is possible to argue without resorting to name calling and all the rest that is way too common on the internet.

We can agree to disagree... but I'm still right ;);););)

Ok, on that note I will agree with Danny that the TO bearing on these trucks blow. I guess they used a softer metal on some part of it that gets grooved over time and messes up your clutch engagement. I never had the problem, but being supercharged (and using it)caused my clutch to burn up pretty quickly, so I put a stage 3 clutch in it and figured while I was in there Id do the flywheel and upgrade the throwout bearing to prevent any more failures.

But again, you're talking 50k+miles (at least) of use before most people starting having TO bearing issues

Why are the TO bearings getting sketchy at 50k miles? Is this common? My last Dodge 1500 went 148k before any clutch work and my F-150s went much farther than that.

To be clear I think they're talking hypotheticals about our trucks. The TO bearings in the 2nd gen Tacos and the FJ Cruiser were questionable and a known early wear point. Allegedly the TO bearing for 3rd gen tacos are a different part and designed slightly different.

Time will tell if anything's actually changed.

I did some research and was surprised to find that in some manual transmission vehicles even first gear IS synchronized! As you said the 2016 Tacoma has a fully synchronized transmission and that would include first gear. Thank you for enlightening me on this. I've admitted I'm an old dinosaur before but want to extend my apologies for posting incorrect information on this site. I stated all synchronized transmissions are not synchronized in first and reverse. Though I am still correct thus far as I know regarding reverse I stand corrected about first which again can be and in this case IS synchronized.

I'm old but still teachable. Thanks. Dannyblues

I'm glad that you took the effort to do that. It was something that this discussion also caused me to do. Now, even though we disagree on a couple of points, I and can truly say that we are BOTH right!

Wow!!! A supercharged V6!! I'd hate to pay for your gas. How's the mpg with all that kit??? How's that new stage 3 clutch? Does it grab hard and fast like you popped the clutch in an OEM Tacoma? Did you do tuned headers, cat back exhaust and low restriction cold air filter? I saw a video with a guy who had all that and did an 80 foot burnout on video but I think it was on a 2015 4.0 model. I read there was a company ( Paxton? ) that provided those superchargers but since they've left only a ten year parts support inventory I read online and that ended with the 2015 models. Obviously you can still get superchargers if you did on a third gen. You are driving my dream. But my Tacoma is a daily driver most of the year with the mileage kept down in warm weather when I break out the old 1987 Chevy Nova hatchback my mom left me when she died. It's the all ovah Nova! All Toyota including 1.6 four cylinder and three speed auto. Parts are getting hard to come by now. Blessings on your Taco. Dannyblues

I know my 2016 TRD double cab comes with a paper air filter but does have cold air intake. I thought of adding a real high performance cold air intake and tuned exhaust but within headers there isn't any worthwhile gain in hp. Just noise.

The noise of a supercharger isn't noise. It's beautiful music! But I can't afford to have one installed or pay for the gas.

The guy I posted last had a supercharger then added a smaller URD company produced smaller pulley. He had the dealer do the whole truck up and kept his warranty. ( unless they see the video he made of the 80 foot burnout!) He stated that pulley alone added significantly more horsepower, maybe 40 ?, but said he'd never dyno the Tacoma. He said his 4.0 was probably making about 440 hp. I forget the you tube site but he went through the whole custom build on his over a period of videos.

Check it out. You may like it or get some tips. I think I googled supercharger 4.0 tacomas videos on you tube.

Best to you. I live in New Milford Ct. Drop by anytime. I'd love to see your supercharged taco.

By the way my 2016 TRD is double cab, manual V6, black, 17 inch dark grey/ polished aluminum OEM wheels, OEM Firestone destination LE tires, dark grey mud flaps, dark nearly black side runner step, black roll up supported cargo cover, black OEM cargo deck mat .... and it's clean!!! Probably 10 pounds heavier with wax! I get compliments all the time and get "Wow-ed" when they see the mint clean interior and manual six speed. Nicest vehicle I've ever owned.

Cost more than my first house in Levittown Long Island back in 1978! Dannyblues

I find this impossible with this truck. There is not enough torque to keep the truck happy in 2nd gear below ~10mph. At least in my truck (I dont see why it would be any different), I need to downshift to 1st if I want to crawl along below 10 mph.

I believe that SC is a 2nd gen. As far as I know there is no forced induction for our '16-'17 trucks.

I've owned six Toyotas with manual transmissions. 3 of the trucks and one corolla racked up over 200,000. I've only ever replaced one transmission related part on any of them. The clutch slave cylinder on the '88 corolla blew at about 220,000. That car was my wifes daily driver, then taught my daughter on it and it became her daily driver. After a couple of years we taught my son how to drive it and passed it down to him. He drove it for a while and gave it to my brother with 268,000 on the odo. I have no idea how many miles it had on it when he sold it. I never double clutch and unless light is crazy long I idle in 1st with the clutch depressed. In my experience, under normal driving conditions these are nearly indestructible.

totally agree. Danny is right that there is extra wear on the TO bearing. back in the day that could mean the difference in keeping or losing your job by making a delivery on time... or worse. but nowadays the wear is so insignificant that you don't much need to think about it if you mind your MT manners and don't ride the clutch or so anything stupid.

Hello Danny, I appreciate your sharing of experience/knowledge on the topic.

My belief is that reverse is also synchronized, as you can actually get the tranny to go into that gear while rolling forward. The first time was by accident, when I got a bit shift happy while backing into my driveway (wasn't quite stopped when I pulled to the side of the road). No grinding, no nothing..NADA. Just slipped into gear. You try that in an older vehicle and it'll definitely let you know you facked up!

I find I can roll it down to 6 mph in second as, occasionally 4 mph when doing an illegal " rolling stop" at a clear intersection with a stop sign. The trick sometimes is to slow to a speed where the engine isn't lugging or about to stall in second gear, then at 4 to 10 mph, wherever you find that point, put in the clutch still in second and give it gas as you let the clutch out and roll away. Avoids the downshift into first

I just found out first gear is synchronized but it sure doesn't feel like it. Unless I'm damn near stopped or better, fully stopped, I can't get down into first gear without some complaint from the transmission. I hate the sound of gears grinding or the feel of resistance downshifting into first.

I'm not sure but maybe a double clutch down with a blip of the throttle in neutral during the downshift may ease it into first if you are still rolling ( like 5 mph or so ). Myself, I plan to bring it down to first when necessary only at a full stop or at least maybe 2 mph or so. Otherwise I'll put in the clutch still in second and roll away- as long as I still have a few mph of motion going, then let out the clutch as if I'm starting in second gear. But as I just said I am still rolling ( if not slowly). I tried and found starting in second possible but not really good for the drivetrain. Too big a gap in gearing between first and second.
