heads up though, you gots to have patience patience patience. your food will take longer to make but it will taste absolutely great.

and if you ever do brisket, you wont have to pay $16+ a pound . HEB in texas has them all the time for $1.99 a pound

or you can start easy with a masterbuilt electric smoker. flavor wont be as good as a regular smoker but it will be so much easier to control the temps

    that little guy looks interesting.

So how do I know if its good for both grilling and smoking?

Does it need to have a dedicated smoke box if I want to smoke?

I would get a weber kettle and start grilling on that. It's a time tested design and cheap, you can get set up for $100-150. You can also use it for smoking if you want to try some small butts, chickens, pork ribs but it will be perfect for grilling up a dinner for 4.

After you play around with the kettle you can decide if you want a stand alone smoker for bigger cuts and longer smokes. I use a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker and love it. The middle size is $300 but it's money well spent.
